Oolite 1.80 crashing at random intervals

Hi,

I've been merrily cruising between Isinor and Ensoreus all evening, trying to get some cash together, and my new install of 1.80 has crashed 3 times so far (once while being attacked by a large party of pirates, once in witchspace during a thargoid attack and once whilst with my feet up drinking a mug of coffee).

This is becoming a nuisance as I have a full load of cargo I want to sell.

I am running 32 bit Oolite on an old Dell Inspiron laptop.

I did not get this problem with Oolite 1.77

Is there anything I can do to improve this situation (apart from get a newer laptop!)

Could you post a Latest.log file after a crash, please? They sometimes have clues, though not always.

This might be the problem - drivers claim shader support but don't support the entire OpenGL 2.0 standard. Try keeping the graphics settings at "normal detail" for the entire game and see if that prevents a crash.

Try running on the command line

gdb oolite.app/oolite
from the install directory. (If you don't have gdb, it'll be in your distribution's repository)

That'll say some things for a bit and then give you a prompt. Type 'run' and press return to run Oolite from within gdb. When Oolite crashes, go back to the gdb prompt and type 'bt' and press return.

This will give some output containing lots of ?s, but paste it up here anyway - there might be some clue in the bits that aren't.

That or it will suddenly turn stable and you won't be able to reproduce the crash at all... ;-)

This caused by the missing variables like LD_LIBRARY_PATH, a workaround if you edit the oolite.app/oolite-wrapper script and insert gdb and a space into the begin of the 69. line before ./oolite.app/oolite, then start the wrapper and type run, then bt after the crash.

Or you can enable core dumps with

ulimit -c unlimited
(note there's no 'n' in 'ulimit', but there is in 'unlimited')

Then run Oolite:

oolite.app/oolite
When it crashes it'll create a file called "core", which is a dump of the process memory at the time of the crash. Then run

gdb oolite.app/oolite core
Once in gdb skip the run command and just run bt.

Ok,

I've tried the above... set ulimit to unlimited, and edited oolite-wrapper to include gdb on line 69.

I ran Oolit, flew around a bit and this time it froze the laptop completely, rather than drop out into Unity.

Had to reboot the laptop.

Now, although I can see all the oolite folders and their contents, if I try to run Oolite I get the following message:

The program 'oolite' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install oolite


If I go into Ubuntu Software Centre there is no sign of Oolite.

If I try reinstalling Oolite 1.80 I get the following:

The file “/home/roger/.cache/.fr-i4hHm7/oolite-1.80.linux-x86.run” could not be opened.

Suggestions please!

Try restoring your installation with the oolite updater. Execute:

Please, note that this will rollback the oolite-wrapper change.
