OXZ Addition Requests

Post by mossfoot »

Don't know if there is a thread for this anywhere, but I figured we should have place to request our favorite OXPs to be updated to OXZs, not only for ease of use, but to keep them in the public eye for new gamers, and perhaps inspire the developers to update them if they haven't looked at them in a while? :)

If there is a thread for this, point me in the right direction and slap me upside the head ;)

The best place is probably in the thread for the individual OXP. Most authors have 'notify' set on their OXP threads, so that if someone posts to it, they'll get emailed.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

What if an OXP is more or less abandoned but still works well, can someone else update it?

Depends on the license, the perhaps stated wishes of the original author, and how people are feeling.

Several older OXPs have been picked up by other people for maintenance purposes, so it's possible but is generally a case-by-case basis for whether it happens or not.

Which OXPs are you interested in? The [wiki]Beer Cooler[/wiki] is already available

There will be some where the author has just disappeared, and if nobody else is willing or able to take them on, they could just fade away.
The other point worth making is that with the huge changes that were introduced in v1.80 many older OXPs will need a serious overhaul to bring them right up to date and this all takes time, and some (like myself) also see this as an oportunity to make improvements as well as just updating, which of course adds even more time.
It is therefore quite likely that several older OXPs are already being sorted out, but are not yet ready for release as OXZs.

What the others have said. Personally I think that the OXZified OXPs found from the expansion manager can be assumed to work with the current version of Oolite. This means that if an OXP is orphaned or it's maintainer does not have time or does not want to maintain it any more, it needs a new maintainer that does the conversion and sees that it works as intended. Also note that the conversion to OXZ often requires more than just writing a manifest.plist file. Sadly this is only possible on OXPs with a proper licence. Most notably GalNavy will not be OXZified, unless Nemoricus comes back and licences it.

That said, which OXPs are you concerned about?

Until you upgrade that sucker with a tea-warming option, you can fuggedaboudit :D (or, you know, I could just alter the code to it says tea warmer instead ;) )

As for what I was interested in, part of the problem is I don't remember what I used to have in 1.77. I just got everything I liked in the add-on list and now and then look over the old OXPs hoping to find something from my old game (I had something that gave me a rescue fee for captured pilots and a screen telling me who it was and what I got when I docked, for example. Haven't seen that happen in my new game)

Auto-eject is something I had to get as OXP, as I recall.

As I learn what the others are I'll try and find the original thread for them.

<scratches head> That's a core game feature anyway.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Weird. I've captured a few pilots lately and nothing pops up when I dock. I'll have to pay closer attention next time in case there's something to report. might just be my foggy memory.

It's definitely happening in 1.80: just the other night I was stiffed out of a C*125 insurance payout, and got a C*7 bounty chip instead. 7 credits! I ask you. That's not a bounty, that's an overdue library book.

Wait, you mean you're not getting escape pod retrieval bonuses as well? I'm not imagining things?

Oh, I just remembered. I'd like to see the Black Monks as an OXZ ;) I intend to cross their paths someday, but for now they're nice atmosphere.
