Go to F4 and edit commander and ship details there.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Re: Commanders name stays as Jameson
He's right you know
Start new commander
Save (as Commander Virgin)
f5 shows name as jameson
launch and dock
f5 shows name as jameson
f2- load commander
commander Virgin listed
select commander Virgin
f5 shows Jameson.
Oops!
Edited to add:- Surely we shouldn't need to go to f4 etc (as per Cody's post)

<grins> I was one of them once. I only joined the forum to ask a question about save-files... now look at me!spud42 wrote:cheers... damn noobs...
Using F4 is more immersive, Smivs... ship registration, paperwork, etc! <chortles>

Re: Commanders name stays as Jameson
This - i.e. storing your Commander name somewhere other than the name of the savegame - is to stop the situation in missions where you're (as advised!) keeping periodic backups of your progress in case you hit a bug in the mission or really mess things up ... and so get "Hello, Commander Smivs" ... "Good work, Commander Smivs2" ... "Hey, Smivs3, can you help us out with this".Smivs wrote:Edited to add:- Surely we shouldn't need to go to f4 etc (as per Cody's post)
It'll take a little getting used to but I think is the better way to do it.
(It also means you can make your ship's name official in the game, so that NPCs recognise it)

Ah, OK. I'm with you now. As you say, we'll get used to it.

Re: Commanders name stays as Jameson
If anything, it's something new players would appreciate more. Tying in your player name to your commander name can be problematic (as pointed out).
Only thing I would suggest is a more stand-out way of addressing the player/ship name section. It just kind of blends in with all the other stuff on the F4 menu.
Perhaps divide up the F4 menu, with a "Jobs" section at the top, "News" below that (if applicable), and "Other" at the bottom (which would include stuff like pilot naming, ship library, etc...)?

I also think it wouldn't hurt to adjust the save and load screens, to make it clear that the save name is distinct from the commander's name.
It's not just a case of 'that's what he was expecting from previous versions' - It's what the player is lead to expect based on the text of the save/load screen.

Re: Commanders name stays as Jameson
Yes, it's definitely better being "Commander Rowland of the good ship Kikis Delivery Service" than "Commander Rowland17"
Pity I couldn't spell the ship name as "Kiki's Delivery Service" but never mind, I'm sure there's a good reason.

It's a known bug on Windows/Linux that we weren't able to fix in time for 1.80. We should certainly have it fixed in 1.82; depending on the nature of the fix maybe even in 1.80.1ffutures wrote:Pity I couldn't spell the ship name as "Kiki's Delivery Service" but never mind, I'm sure there's a good reason.
Workaround #1: edit your savegame - look for the
ship_unique_name
key. Take backups first, of course.Workaround #2: buy a Mac, load your save game on the Mac, change the name there, save the game, reload it on your usual computer.

Workaround #3: Ask someone with a Mac to do it for you..
(note to self.. update my old MacBook to Oolite 1.80)

Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Re: Commanders name stays as Jameson
what a can of worms i opened.
as Neelix said it is not clear at all that the save name is not the same as the commander name. i assumed that the new version was the same as the old.
there is that word...lol ( ass u me ) .
i dont understand the numbers added to the commander name. it has never happened to me but then i do tend to overwrite the old save as i go along so thats probably why.

Re: Commanders name stays as Jameson
It's just something some of us do when say testing a mission. We save very frequently (so we can go back if something is broken), and it just makes sense to number the saves so we know which is which.spud42 wrote:i dont understand the numbers added to the commander name.
