BGS HD Backgrounds

I play Oolite on a 1440x900 monitor. The backgrounds in BGS are 1024x512 so they end up stretched. I put in some 1440x900 ones, but it seems as though they need to be in 2:1 aspect as they didn't show up at all. So I made a 1800x900 one. That showed up, but still pixellated. So I did a 2048x1024 full resolution image — still pixellated, and only displayed a small part of the middle of the image. What's the trick to getting native resolution background images?

Unfortunately, at the moment, you can't. The game maps a 512x512 texture across the largest aligned square of the screen, with any extra texture that may exist placed around the edges.
Trying to figure out a way to increase this resolution is on my list: doing it without breaking all the existing backgrounds (including HUD textures and perhaps HUDs in general) assuming that size is not straightforward, though.

Thanks. At least I know I can stop trying now. Two followup questions.
1. So, is there a particular size of image that will maximize the resolution to current capacities? Or will any image greater than 1024x512 be identical?
2. What about the image with the rotation planet? That's always in HD for me. Is there a way to make use of however that thing is displayed to produce HD backgrounds for docked screens?

1. I suppose if you had a really wide screen, a 2048x512 image might be needed to reach all the way out to the edges.
2. The one on the F7 screen? That's not an image - that's a genuine 3-D planet. If you had a really large screen, you probably would find that it started to appear pixelly/blurry just as the real planets do if you get too close.

After reading your
nice tale I found this topic. The solution is in the first message in
HD background images, before some more images.
