Oolite Bulletins

Been playing Oolite for several weeks now(Dangerous) on my Windows 7 desktop. Installed Oolite 1.76(using Synaptics Package Manager) on a desktop running Linux Mint 16. Finally figured out how to created the AddOns folder & where to put it. Googled & browsed this forum considerably & kept running into the question, "home or system install?" I had no idea & what's the difference?

Anyhow, noticed that Spoken Messages are not available in Linux 1.76, as they are in Windows version. Are Spoken Messages available in 1.77 for Linux? Or just not available for Linux.

Next question: How to upgrade to Oolite 1.77 in Linux Mint 16?

Disclaimer: I am not a penguinista!

Remove (purge) Oolite 1.76 completely from your computer (having first moved/copied your OXPs and saves), and get Oolite 1.77.1 for Linux from here.

Thanks, Cody. I have DL 1.77 & saved to a flash drive. The only way that I have installed software on Linux is through Syn Pkg Mgr or the Software Center in Linux. Do I just copy this file to my Linux desktop & dbl click? Or . . .? Sorry, but I said I was new to Linux.

To install Oolite, open the folder containing the Oolite download, then open a terminal and depending on whether you want a home folder install or a system-wide install do the following:

A. Drag and drop the download file into a terminal and press enter. (Home folder install)

OR

B. In a terminal type sudo followed by a space, then drag and drop the download file into the terminal and press enter. (System-wide install)

Use the synaptic package manager to uninstall 1.76, otherwise stuff might get left behind that you don't want. System-wide installations require root access so manipulating files usually has to be done in terminal Home installations don't require root access so you don't have to enter you password to install or manipulate files. Linux installations put folders in different places, your logs are in a hidden folder .Oolite in the home folder, use Ctrl h to see your hidden folders. If you put your AddOns folder in there I believe it will remain intact when you uninstall 1.76 and Oolite will access it there once its reinstalled. Installing in terrminal as CommRLock78 describes will work or if you want you can right-click on the zip file for 1.77.1 and select extract here. Then you should see a file with a black and white icon like the terminal icon. Double-click that to install.

Thank you all, I'll give it a try this evening. Too much grass to cut right now. Think an Energy Bomb would work on big yards?

Does anyone know if the spoken messages work in Linux, Oolite 177?

Anyway, with my installation of 1.77.1, the spoken messages work just fine.

Check also this post ("How To Install" section) that might be helpful.
You will need, however, to change the filenames with the one that you downloaded.

If you get intimidated by the terminal and the commands, or my greeklish at that post are confusing you,
feel free to come back here for clarifications.

OK, no luck getting 177.1 installed. I copied the .gz file to the desktop, right-click & selected "extract here". Opened a terminal & drug the extracted file to the terminal, with & without sudo prefixing. Get "command not found" error. Followed the link to the other posts about install & tried several suggestions - nothing worked. Help Surely there is a simple way to execute the extracted file from the desktop!!

Try the method I described in this post. This is regarding an update, but as far as I know it also applies to new installs. Obviously change the name to the current version you have downloaded.
I previously had a system-wide install, but have recently moved to a Home install, and think it is better for several reasons.

Okay, finally got it. DL the 177.1 file from Firefox on the Mint desktop, dbl clicked on it & the executable file with the B&W icon appeared. Dbl clicked on it & selected "run in terminal". Was asked s or H; selected H & it installed. Now just get my oxp's & save files in the right place! Thanks ALL.
