Tractor beam destroying containers?

Well, tractor beam is fun 
But there was a strange observation: i've seen really many containers in the explosion cloud, but when i came into it and started scooping one of them just exploded before my viewport with a strange sound of popping bubble (clearly distinct from collision sound). And suddenly all canisters vanished expect three or four. Is it related to tractor beam function somehow? I've noticed it doing weird things - once it reflected a metal fragment with a speed far beyond any reasonamble limit - it vanished almost instantly, i've just seen a spark on the IFF screen..
