This game's coming along very nicely, I really must get around to playing it sometime
I keep telling myself the same thing.. Unfortunately, I'm far too busy dealing with exigencies related to dual-booting Linux on old MacBooks, of late.. :(
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

As for what should be in the tutorial - some thing which teaches you how to dodge laser fire!
I was never good at it, and now I've gotten so rusty I've been reduced to space dust thrice...

In a word, constant speed and direction changes, in 3 dimensions. Distance plays a big part too.. close-in dogfiighting is where it's at. Also, NPCs find some manoeuvres harder to compensate for than others.. experiment!

<nods, grinning> Yep, up-close and personal - that's how we like it!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!
