Store saved games in the right folder please

Hi

I have just had my experience with Oolite and I must say that it great - ie. it is just a fun to play as Elite was back in my teen years all those years ago.

Well, down to business: when I was looking in the folder where Oolite is stored I discovered a folder called "oolite-saves", I had a look in it to see my saved game, however, that wasn't there and all I could find was yet another folder called "snapshots" which did confuse me a little.

However, I had a more thorough look for my saved game and I did find it in a rather strange place (C:\Oolite\oolite.app)

I know that this might sound a little picky, but I think that it should be made so a user's saved games was stored in the "oolite-saves" folder (C:\Oolite\oolite.app\oolite-saves) - it just more nice and tidy this way.

The way it is now the saved game is store together with all the .dlls which clutters the view of the folder.

Not picky at all. I even would go further: saved games don't belong in the application folder at all. I don't know how windows handles things, but on the mac, a program should not assume that the user has write permission for the application folders. e.g. I always play from within an user account that can't write in application folders.

On the mac version of Oolite, the games are stored by default in the 'documents' folder in the user area. But, the user can choose a different folder to store the saved files.

On Linux the oolite.saves folder is in the Home directory, and contains both the saves and the snapshots (these are any screenshots you take in-game by the way, if you haven't used it yet). Also in the Home directory (as a hidden file) is the .oolite directory containing the AddOns and Logs folder.
The main application files are one level higher.

It is supposed to do put them there. I wonder why it isn't for you.

Oolite should pick up whatever folder you last had open to save games to, so when you next go to save your game, you should have the directory listing for C:\Oolite\oolite.app in the in-game file manager. If you scroll down the list to the "oolite-saves" entry, and press Ctrl and enter, it'll open that folder. If you then save your game in there instead it should work properly in future for saving and loading.

Possibly the first time you started the game it was unable to find the save directory for some reason, and went back to the main directory to have somewhere to use? (and then stuck there because after that it always uses the last-used directory if possible)

Hi

Thank you for helping out.

I started a new commander with the same name and saved that save game into the right folder, then I closed the program and browsed to the folder (C:\Oolite\oolite.app ) and moved my initial saved game to (C:\Oolite\oolite.app\oolite-saves) and overwrote the newly created saved game and this seems to work.

Now you can get on with enjoying the game :D
BTW I don't think anyone actually welcomed you, so 'Hello and welcome to the friendliest board this side of Riedquat'.

Yeahhh, now I can get on with this great game.

Thank you for the warm welcome.

btw, I have visiting your homepage and must say that I'm really impressed of your various OXPs

I would sure like to know how to change in-game GUIs like menus and HUDs - I can't seem to find this info in the wiki.

This type of thing can be done via OXP. A good place to start is probably the wiki 'OXP how-to' page. That will give you an idea how to structure an OXP and has lots of info about the various 'parts' of an OXP as well.
To do the really clever stuff you will need to use javascript (js) as well. The wiki pages are here.
There is not a lot of flexibility in the GUIs/menus but they are still pretty versatile, and HUDs are quite easy to do if you want to keep it simple.
It's a steep learning curve, but well worth it, and if you get stuck or don't know/can't find something there is all the help you will need right here on the board.
Health Warning:- Developing OXPs (or going over to the Dark Side as we call it!) is addictive and can take over your life :D
