I was being chased by pirates, and made it into the safety of the Space station's protective area. The police weren't helping me, so I docked

When I relaunched, the evil ship (offender status) was hanging about, so I attacked it and then the police jumped on me instantly! This hardly seems fair...

Yeah, the GalCops are notorious donut-eaters... They help out when they feel like it...
You're pretty much on your own out there, *never* assume someone will go out of his way to help out. It happens, but not always.

And re: the your retliation being looked upion badly by them: I'm not sure, but it looks like it is consdered half-illegal to wage wars around the station, the Aegis (sphere of influence around the station, you notice you're inside it, when that 'S' appears...) is considered a bit of a safe-zone... Except when you shoot up a Fugitive or an Alien, 'mere' offenders seems to be looked upon as petty criminals, I guess.
