Yes this is a history-making event. No-one has ever been injured or killed by a meteorite before. Now latest reports say over 500 people have been injured, some seriously. Most injuries have been by flying glass, although a zinc factory roof has collapsed too.
Maybe this event will prompt more investment in asteroid defence programmes.

EDIT: Sky News just estimated the size of the meteor to be around 10 tons in mass.

It sounds like an air-burst a bit like the Tunguska event, where it exploded before impacting the Earth. A wider area of damage, but less severe than if it had hit the planet. I guess it could have been worse.

Wow - that looked AWESOME. Sorry if it's worrying to some people, but it looked like something straight out of a disaster film.
Exciting stuff. I agree with Medvedev though - we may need to look at something that can stop it from happening on a larger scale. If it's possible. Maybe a big net?
David Braben's sweater?

Yes there was an air burst, however several fragments have landed, including one hitting a lake 1km outside the city of Chebarkul. A crater 6m wide has been found at the shore of the lake.

The good thing is that - seen from a statistical perspective - it will now take a looooong time till the next asteroid get's so close to earth!
We're saved!!!

Long time, yes, about 14 hours until Asteroid 2012 DA14 passes inside the ring of communications satellites tonight!

That's why I always take a bomb with me, every time I fly: the odds against there being
two bombs on board are astronomical, so I know I'm statistically safe.

Well, well, the exception proves the rule.
And this also means that we are even safer!!!!! (if we also survive the second one, that is)

According to
Deep Space Industries could that asteroid contain metals, with a value of 130 Billion US$. (Average asteroid contains 10 to 30% metals). So that makes it interesting to intercept it tonight and let it impact on earth.
Deep Space Industries starts to become a serious competitor of Oolite mining industries.
