How many commanders are there in the ooniverse?

I see that just over 2600 commanders have registered their presence in the eight. While many commanders prefer not to be recognised and pull their hoodies down tight as they peer through the windows and even more like it out there in the black and avoid social gatherings all together, it's difficult to gauge how popular the ooniverse is.
The recent release of 1.77 and its flurry of OXP updates (thankyou very much
I have 84 of them installed) has upgraded the game immeasurably, i want to say its a completely different game to 1.65 that I played previously but it isn't, it's exactly the same game just richer and more diverse (and intensive, and immersive, and addictive, and... you get the picture
) anyways Im presuming that all of this has prompted more than a few commanders to update their install and i am curious how many downloads the game and its expansions are getting, anyone care to share some figures?

Probably the only sensible measure would be the total number of downloads of the core game, across all platforms. With the understanding that many Linux Distributions include Oolite in their offerings as well, so there are probably quite a few Ooliteers out there we don't even know about.
(Another indication may well be the fact that at certain times of day, it's quite common for this board to have anywhere from 2 to 10 times (or more) as many unregistered readers as logged in members viewing the boards)

I would guess that most Linux users would download from the site as the repo ones are usually out of date and don't work reliably. I installed from repo but it had problems, so persisted and downloaded from site - and now I have to admit that I have an addiction, I think we may need to form OOA - Order of Oolite Anonymous - to assist fellow commanders with this addiction - this board serves as a good outlet.
Once again thanks to everyone one for all the work behind the scenes in the program as well as the all the OXP's - it makes for an awesome game.

On macupdate.com there are just over 20.000 downloads since the game has been registered there. After the update to 1.77 appeared there on 15.1.13 there were 226 downloads.

This page has download stats, but I guess it doesn't cover them all.
If I click on the 'Files' tab there, I become confused by the latest stable version listed... any clues?

Don't bother with the Sourceforge statistics. They are a total, unrecoverable mess.
Unfortunately, the truth is that at the moment we do not have clear information about the game's downloads. With the clusterf*** that the Sourceforge pages are, combined with the fact that Berlios links directly to them without updating their own counters (currently all showing 0 for all projects), the only possible source I can think of is Google Analytics' stats of
http://www.oolite.org/downloads. Still, I tried to access it today and although I did have an account for monitoring oolite.org, it seems that it has been disabled/deleted/whatever and I am asked to register again. Tough.

Yeah, I had wondered about that!

Well i think its hard to say how many Commander's there are out there.
And going by downloads alone doesn't really give you an idea, because many people could of downloaded it, played it for a bit then stopped playing.
I only found Oolite through a semi-popular youtuber that covers KSP. And that was day before yesterday.
But i think there are more people playing Oolite compared to AAA titles.
