Question on Oolite ship add-ons in Windows version

Hi there,

I'm having great fun with playing Oolite (downloaded it earlier this week).

I've managed to get military lasers on the front, fuel scoops, injectors etc. etc., but I also bought an 'Advanced Space Compass', but nothing seems to happen - is it enabled in the Windows version?

Same with the 'Extra EnergyBank'. I purchased one, but it doesn't seem to appear on the HUD (is it supposed to?) - how do I know it's active?

Thanks for a great game!

Bottom right, in the circle that used to just show your orientation to the planet or the sun, you can now toggle Witch point beacon and Beacon outside station, and current target, by hitting the "\" key, repeatedly. That's your advanced compass: basically it shows you a few things which are beyond normal scanner range. Handy, for hunting pirates, since they tend to hang out on the line between witch point exit and station (i.e. you go into station, to empty your holds, and then go out empty in the hopes of meeting a Python-derived pirate, or some such, to beat the s**t out of, and scoop his cargo after he dies ;)).

The extra energy unit should have added an extra yellow stripe of energy to your total reserves, in the display on the right. Energy is used for shields-recharge and ECM, as well as by twin ion cannons, if you have them.

Welcome to the forums, anyway ;)!

:D that lovely 'cargo hold full' message after a good scooping spree!

No no.

The Extra Energy Unit (and the Naval Energy Unit) do not add to your energy reserves.

Instead they improve the rate at which your energy reserves are recharged.

Extra energy banks are not (yet) available to purchase.

OK, I played it again and during a dog-fight it tells me the Energy Unit was damaged ( subsequently repaired at a station). However, it doesn't appear on-screen in the HUD, but at least it does seem to be working.

Also, the Advanced Compass doesn't seem to do a lot. Once purchased the planet icon to the right of the scanner disappears. I jumped into another system and got into a dogfight with several craft, but pressing '\' did not activate any additional icons (as shown on the web) - so I can only assume the Compass isn't working properly on the Windows version. I tried every key in the hope of activating it, but nothing worked.

Apart from that, it's still fun to fly!

yes, from what people write here, the advanced compass isn't all it's supposed to be in the Windows version.

and no, extra energy units aren't shown in the HUD.

but do enjoy ;)

FWIW the space compass has never worked for me in Windows (both the plain vanilla and advanced one). Probably due to the antiquated ATI Rage Mobility Gfx card in my creaking old laptop.

Played the latest build on my housemate's eMac this weekend. I'm now considering 'the switch'

The compasses work intermittently for me. Before Nic's installer version, the Advances Compass worked perfectly, but the ordinary one didn't work very well. The positioning dot worked, but the outline never rendered.

Now, neither the advanced or normal compasses work. Occasionally I will get a ghost of the graphic (some random pixels), but that's about it.

Nobody going to comment on Giles' "yet"?

The compass thing is bizarre. It's a vanilla part of the game core, and is identical for all platforms (and is constructed by the same methods as the rest of the graphics in the panel).
