Transferring kit to another ship

If you have some very nice kit on your current ship (a Naval energy unit, for example), are you able to transfer it to a new ship when you buy one?
If not, can you sell off very nice kit on your current ship before you trade it in?

I'm afraid not. You have to sell your ship 'as is' including all equipment, and then re-fit a new ship to your taste. You will get a much higher trade-in on a well equiped ship, and of course better-equiped ships cost more to buy as well.
The one exception to this is a very special bit of kit awarded by a core-game mission in one of the later galaxies which is transferable - sorry, no spoilers here

I had a nasty feeling that you were going to say that. So, in retrospect, it might have been better to change ships just before I finished the last quest. Too late now - my previous 'checkpoint' save was far too long ago.
Ah well, I will stick with the cobbie for a bit longer, and switch professions (and ship) later on.

To maximise trade-in also make sure the ship has just had a maintenance overhaul as well.
Passenger berths can be bought and sold unlike other equipment.
Your Naval Energy Unit can be replaced provided it was awarded to you for services rendered, but not if it was just bought with a second-hand ship. If you have been awarded one for a core mission, they are available for sale and can be repaired at a suitably high TL system.
The Cobby 3 is a fine ship, by the way, and unless you are planning on a carreer in bulk-haulage it is hard to beat.

I thought I might try a Boa Cruiser for a while, so, yes, bulk haulage was in my mind. After I tire of that, then the next jump may well be to a Fer-de-lance and a career looking for bounty.

Maybe - If you have oxps installed that give you access to more equipment, it might be that some of that equipment is kept when you buy a new ship. It depends on the setting of the
isPortableBetweenShips variable.

Good luck... the Ferdie would not be my choice, if I were contemplating a career as a bounty-hunter (perish the thought).

Yes, I was of course only referring to 'core' equipment - some OXP equipment can be transferred.
The Boa Class Cruiser is an excellent ship and is the only core ship to come close to matching the performance of the Cobra 3 with more cargo space. There are many OXP ships which look better on paper, but these can unbalance the game one way or another so they should be chosen with care.

So what's the BCC like in combat? Given my predilection for bounty hunting and scooping vast amounts of cargo from my victims, uh I mean well-righteously slapped bad guys, is it better than the Cobbie? Assuming standard outfits (no OXPs) and all appropriate upgrades (no Naval EU yet, though).

It's a very worthy fighter indeed. Very slightly below the Cobra 3 in terms of speed and handling, but much tougher with twice the energy banks. I can highly recommend it.

Pricey, though. Looks like I need to shoot me some more pirates!
Thanks for the gen.
