Where did those kills come from?

'Out of the box' Oolite - no OXPs.
I have just completed the first mission. As it happens, my kill of the constrictor was my 512th. So I got a "Right on Commander". No other obvious sign of a reward, other than the greeting when next I docked. The next time I noticed my kills score, it was well into the 700s, yet I could not have made more than a handful of additional kills. Is that some sort of a reward, or some sort of an issue?
