System Crash When Playing Oolite

I don't know if it is Oolite, or the Linux Distro I'm using, which is Fuduntu, but the game has closed down every time I try to play since yesterday. Well, that was when I first noticed it. The only thing I see in Latest.log is a couple of .png files missing, and that shouldn't cause a system crash. I just wanted to check this here, before I go to the Fuduntu Forum for answers. I'm running 1.76.1, 64-bit. Any help would be appreciated.

Try removing all of your OXPs first. If you still get a crash after that, then I suggest re-downloading and re-installing.

It would be interesting to see the Latest.log following a Shift-restart too. Missing pngs should not cause a crash, but depending on which exactly pngs we are talking about, their absence might be causing a shutdown via exception handling or assert failure. If critical core resource files have been accidentally removed, the game will obviously not launch. Latest.log might be reporting an exception or something similar in this case. Also, look for any messages in stderr.txt (or the equivalent of stderr.txt on Linux).

Probably not relevent, but I have had CTDs caused by missing main station textures. I shot myself in the foot a couple of times while doing the stations for Accessories :roll: :oops:

I don't see any problems, but I didn't really try to play the game, either. I just restarted, and exited to check Latest.log. I'll try playing the game to see if I still get a system crash.

I just discovered another thing, which may very well be the cause of these crashes. I'm getting a slight electrical shock from my laptop if a finger touches anywhere around the edge of the keyboard. Anyone experience this before? Is it a hardware problem? If it is, dang! :(

Yes that's a hardware problem, and might be the cause of the crashes to boot.

Scary! Whether that is the problem or not, you should have it checked out. Have you taken the laptop apart and cleaned it?

That's what I was afraid of. I haven't tried anything with this Inspiron, though I took my Latitude apart several times. Is it much different? Oh, sorry, you may not use Dell computers. I'll mess around with it, as it sure isn't any good to me acting like it is. :|

I have a Latitude D400 :) (as well as a Dimension desktop ;)). I don't know what taking apart an Inspiron is like, but from the looks of the pictures I've seen, it doesn't look too much different than the Latitude. Just take some snapshots with your phone's camera as you take it apart :).

You'll be alright - just take your time, and be careful not to forget anything while you're putting it back together, otherwise you'll be hitting your head on the wall like Thargoid's avatar. Those laptops are super-engineered - not like a desktop, pop the case open and put the part you missed back in, with laptops, missing a part while putting it back together can mean completely taking it apart again :D.

Than you have not examined a current i-mac desktop computer. Mine is already very flat and made of one block of aluminium. You can only access the interior after removing the front glass plate and screen. And the newest i-Mac is even thinner. :( I truly hope, I never have to open it up.

Well, I did it. Got it apart and blew it out some. Tried to snug everything back into place very carefully. I really am not certain if it worked, or not. I keep testing for the electric tingle I was getting before, but I don't think it's happening every time. One thing, though, trying to use the "A" key has become a trick. Sometimes it doesn't respond, other times the slash symbol turns up with the "A". Weird. Probably going to have to take it apart again, at least enough to check how secure the connections are. Oh, I also seem to have lost one speaker for the sound, though the headphone jack is still putting out stereo, so it's probably a bad connection with the speaker. Fun time. :roll: :)
