He helped fire my interest in astronomy when I was a kid.

Terribly sad news. He looked very unwell on the latest Sky at Night, so much so for the first time ever I considered how the program would be without him. It seems my musings were somewhat prophetic.

Edited to add:- He will be remembered for many great achievements, but one fact always comes back to me. That during his lifetime he met the first man to fly, the first man to go into space and the first man to walk on the moon.

Very sad news indeed

Very, very sad ... a great populariser of science and astronomy, and a brilliant broadcaster and author.

For Christmas 1976 (so I was 5) my parents bought me "Patrick Moore's Astronomy Quiz Book" (as I'd started watching Sky at Night and Star Trek with my dad) - and I was hooked, on astronomy in general, science fact and science fiction.

Thank-you Patrick and RIP. It is unlikely that anybody is likely to present the same TV show for more than 55 years (Sky at Night 1957-2012), so you will be in the record books, perhaps forever.

Very sad, but 89 is pretty good innings - which is exactly what he said to me about being 86 when I met him in 2009.

As one of astronomy's great ambassadors and the inspiration to so many to take up the subject, whether as amateurs or as professionals, he is a great loss to the astronomical community.

RIP Patrick.

This is officially the saddest thing that's happened in a year of sad things. I am not ashamed to admit that I shed a tear or two on hearing about it.

Space seems a little smaller when not viewed through a monocle.
