Following discussions elsewhere on this forum, I've added scripts to the version 0.1 Mamushi to ensure that they are unlikely to be found on their own, and therefore vulnerable. Limited testing done under 1.76 so far, in so much as the cloning now seems to work, and Mamushi are appearing in variable size groups under assorted roles. They also seem able to cause a certain amount of grief and damage, but may not be enough of a challenge for a player in an iron ass at present.

Thanks to cim in particular, but also Rese249er and Smivs for their enthusiasm, as well as Thargoid and Eric Walch. Also Commander McLane, whose auto-eject code has been cannabalised for this.

download link is https://www.box.com/s/wxy0yftjsx6k9v5xvsaq

There's now a growing backlog of things todo:
  • for version 1.77 allow multiple Mamushi Escorts to be added to an existing escort group which contains at least one Mamushi

    for version 1.76 add variants of common cargo ships with higher escort counts using only Mamushi escort class (MAX 16)

    put group size limits under OXPConfig control.

    look at Aquatics Guardian to see about multiple launching capability, with the idea of creating a specific Mamushi Carrier. Something like the Harrier equipped through deck cruisers the Royal Navy used to call Aircraft Carriers. This ship would be on sale to police and naval units primarily, but would inevitably end up in the hands of corporate states and pirates. Not a whopping big capital ship, but something more Python sized maybe which could be fought with fairly well.

    Create Osoroshii Light Carrier for 8 Mamushi

    Create Mamushi Katusha

    Look at adding flashing lights from the Viper to a police model Mamushi

    Look at improving the textures.

    Publish the modelling files.

    Get an account on,and create an entry for the WIKI.

12 posts in and already an OXP and a backlog of things to do - you're gonna fit in well on the darkside here ;)

Have a cookie... :twisted:

walk softly and carry a big stick. :-) I tend to lurk, till I have something to contribute. I've been registered on the forum a fair while, and play the game sporadically (a few hours a week for a few months, then not at all for a year). I got back into this and started to do an OXP because my girlfriend's son bought a stupidly fast laptop ('cos he could) and then wanted something to push the CPU. Creating animations in Blender seemed a good idea. Doing an OXP just kind of fell out of that naturally.

Thanks for the cookie it'll go nicely with a cocoa and the dodgy action movie I'm coding in front of.

If anyone is interested the source files are here:

https://www.box.com/s/u1q3ybr118af2zgxuptf

Includes the original blender files, the uv map, and the Serif Photo Plus project used to create the texture map.

These are made available under the same license as the OXP, namely:
This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. To view a copy of this license, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/.
If you want to redo the textures, then I suggest redoing the UV map in blender and modify in your graphics app of choice.

Nice work! By the way, you can also edit the title of your posts here on the BB so you don't have to start a new thread for each new release... 8)

Duly changed.

I now have a basic mesh for a Mamushi carrier:

Image

This will be called the Osoroshii, which is Japanese for dreadful, which in Greek is gorgós. Which ties in to the Medusa myth, without reusing or trading on the Medusa OXP ship, whilst tying back to Mamushi being oriental. I also happen to think it looks awful, but it's a functional design, like the Mamushi, not a pretty one.

The front section is a command module with fuel scoops for escape pod retrieval. Immediately behind that the front section of the main hull is workshops, with crew quarters extending the full length of the hull above the flight deck. Beneath the crew quarters are bays for 8 Mamushi fighters. Behind them is a launch and prep area, leading to a very small dock on the rear hull which should be big enough for a Mamushi, but too small for a player ship. This is where I'm expecting life to get interesting when it comes time to texturing and adding behaviour to the ship. I gather docks can be really 'fun'
The nacelles extruded on each side of the dock contain 2 engine units each.
If you wanted it to carry 16 Mamushi, the main hull would be extended, increasing the ship length by about 25%.

In terms of scale, I need to work out exact dimensions and scale relative to the Mamushi, but it's not going to be much different to an Anaconda by the time I'm done I suspect.

At present it's just a mesh, files can be made available if anyone would like a play. I'm busy this week so having done this it's going on the back burner for a bit anyway.

Rese249er - this anything like what you were imagining for the 249th? Or is it just toooooo ugly :-)

Bulky simplistic design with room for a lot of snubfighters with expert pilots? I was already planning to tinker with the Mamushi and the Aquatics script; I do believe I will adopt the Orososhii for testing purposes at least. Shipbuilder did have a design he was going to help me retrofit, but I haven't heard anything about that lately.
After I talk to Shipbuilder, I may adopt this carrier for the 249th, if that's okay.

Go for it. I'd love to see this being used, rather than just doing it for my own edification.

Just did a basic texture similar to the Mamushi, and I think it looks better already.

If you want the blends I'll load them onto box tomorrow and post the link. Note the scaling is not done, so it's actually smaller than a single Mamushi at present. I tend to work at the basic scale in blender and then apply a scale transform at the end. The ultimate scale will be so that the Mamushi is about 60-70% of the dock size.

If you make any interesting changes to the Mamushi, I'm happy to incorporate them, just let me know.

Anyone here use anything like github or sourceforge for collaboration? If so, any preferences? I may put my files on one of those so that I can open the OXP up for a number of people to contribute to.

Before you do anything further to it, you should correctly orientate it along the three main axes.

x = left/right
y = up/down
z = front/back

Currently the cockpit section is at the ship's bottom, and the dock at its top, and it will look very odd when flying.

Also, if I may say so: the design looks a little phallic. Don't know if that's good or bad, but it perhaps not intended.

Crap. I'm gonna need it scaled, the .dat file and a basic shipdata.plist for me to work with it. I tinker with plists and textures, that's about it.

Not in my setup. I'm using Blender's normal views as labelled, Front, Top, Right/Left and that has the Y and Z axes swapped compared to yours. If you look at the quad view of the basic mesh, you'll see the ship is facing forwards with the dock at the rear currently. I gather that needs to be at the front at the origin, so I'll rotate, scale and translate so the dock is in the correct location to make that work.

By the time it gets to Oolite, the dock sub-entity model needs to be facing so that the open end is pointing down its own local positive z-axis, and centred around that axis. That z-axis does not, however, have to be aligned with the z-axis of the main entity. See the [wiki]Super Bulk Hauler[/wiki] for an example of a ship with an aft dock.

Apologies for not getting back to you sooner Rese249er I lost my internet connection for the best part of 3 days, (Virgin media), so have been a little out of the picture. I'll have a play around with wings and see if I can come up with something suitable if you are still looking for a model to use.

Rese249er - Have a look at the screenshots below of a model I have put together. Let me know if this is the type of thing you are after and if so I will be happy to scale to the required size and donate the model.

o.0 Wow, that's pretty! Would love this ship! As for scale, I'm thinking about as large as a Behemoth-2.
