G'day and welcome aboard, Synchro! 8)

What you're after is BGS, the BackGround Set.

Which pack do you mean by "texture pack"? Oolite has a lot of those..

Hi Synchro, welcome to the boards! As Diziet Sma says, the addon you're looking for is BGS. If you're just starting out, generally you're best just to pick OXPs that add to the eye-candy, rather than ones which affect gameplay. There will be plenty of time to try those out later!

Yours is a common query, so I'll reproduce what I posted in this recent thread:

Recommendations for eye-candy would be based in part on the power of your system, but top of the list would almost certainly be

Griff's Normalmapped Ships
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Griff_Industries

If this is too chunky for your system (as it is for mine :() then you can still enjoy much of the griffy goodness with the

Griff No Shaders Shipset
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Griff% ... rs_Shipset

I would also recommend the

BGS background set
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/BGS

and

Random Ship Names
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Randomshipnames_OXP

as generally beautifying the whole experience.

Since Oolite is GPL, anybody can host it.

The OXPs which are CC licensed can also be hosted by anybody, but not all OXPs have a CC license.

But why not just put links to the homepage, wiki and bulletin boards? Then you don't have to worry about keeping things up to date.

The reason i did not use direct link was so i could put together a Pre- Compiled version with one of my launchers so its just extract and play
I have however linked the launcher to the bulletin board as you suggested....

Check out the "Fan Based Mods" page and you will see what i mean

http://www.eliteforever.co.uk/

Its pretty much setup with the mods you suggested so it looks awsome as soon as you start playing

The only problem with that is, it would only be the Windows version.. Mac and Linux users would be left out..

Perhaps some alternative things to link to:

The nightly build link is to the Windows one, but you can get to the Linux and Mac ones from the same page via links there.

The first one links to the main current player version of the game, which is probably what you want with the OXP list at the bottom as the available mods, plus the link here of course as it's quite a vital part of the community.

But may I also say it's a nice site you have there - good to see a well-written umbrella one for all things Elite(ish).[/color]

I don't think the nighties will be a good link. Those Oolite versions will always be full of small bugs, specially after a new release when major changes are made and a lot of new stuff is added. We like people to test it, but this is only useful when there is feedback at the forum. Therefor I think it only should be linked from this forum.

There have been previous attempts to bundle Oolite with a selection of OXPs. The problems with doing this are that not everybody wants the same OXPs. For example a player with a non-shader computer will not find the game looks very good with OXPs that require shaders, and many players are 'purists' who like to keep as close to the look, feel and gameplay of the original Elite, so may not want the original ships replaced, or background images added to everything. Also somebody who downloads a package may not be aware of the wealth of OXPs on offer - they might think that what they have got is all there is.
One reason Oolite has been so successful is that you can get the basic core game (which is excellent in its own right), and then only add in things you actually want, assuming you want to add to the core game at all.
I plug Oolite several times on my website. I host my OXPs on it and could easily offer downloads of the core game, but instead I link to all the relevant pages (Oolite.org, here and the Wiki) so that people can easily find what they want, they are made aware of everything available and therefore have a choice.

The one thing i havent set up yet is the links page but in the process so will point to the appropriate sites... Elite Dangerous at the moment is initially for pc users so most likely im not gonna get many Mac users visit the site so really its just for nostalga and to introduce the awsome Oolite to many windows elite fans who like me have heard of the game but never took the time to actually download and play it.

Good point about game settings but i was figuring most game fans will have the specs for at least textures and new hud....but i will include in the readme that they can be removed in the mod dir easily which is accessable via the Launcher menu..Or even "Reset to Strict play "from the options reverts it back to basic by the look of it..

Great links thanks....As well as adding them i will be using them myself :)
