Full Stop and Full Thrust?

I was wondering if it would be possible/desirable to introduce the opportunity to hit a key combo like Shift-W or Shift-S to automatically bring the thrust to either extreme.

Well, simply hitting W or S will bring your speed to either extreme.

And this always and automatically happens by the rate which is your ship's Image thrust.

So, if you want to reach your max speed quicker, or brake quicker, you have to buy a ship with a higher thrust rate.

But in my opinion it makes no sense to have something like thrust (and therefore momentum) in the game, and then to override it with "instant max speed" or "instant stop".

I'm not saying override that; I'm saying provide an option to accelerate to full without holding down W or slow to a stop without holding S.

Quickest way to get to max speed is to use fuel injectors, but let go once the bar hits the top.

As for min speed - fly into something solid ;)

Or if you aren't mass locked then just hit 'j' twice.

Double-tap 'J'? I didn't know that. I withdraw the question.

 I don't think that's what Rese249er had in mind.

I like the idea, Freespace has something like it where you can go max/min speed with the pushing of a single button.

BTW - I've used both techniques mentioned above, but I still think this is something worth exploring...

Actually, I read that half-asleep. Not really what I was looking for.

Thanks.

Maybe it could be OXP'd?

It's called a joystick throttle. Push it all the way one way, full acceleration. Push it all the way the other direction, you come to a stop.

Rese249er: Funny how everyone keeps suggesting solutions that are not what you had in mind. I got started thinking about this though, and pulled up my keyconfig.plist. I'm not sure what takes that file and interprets it, but it seems like that would be the place start. I'm still very green when it comes to this business (the only modern language I'm starting to get good with at this point is Matlab). Anyway, it doesn't seem that this would be that hard to do, in theory :D.

No kidding. As for keyconfig.plist, I don't think so. It'd be a new key.
