I just bought some fuel scoops and realized - once I pirated my first booty - I had no idea how to pick it up! I scoured (heh) the help file, but no 'use fuel scoop' key!

You just have to fly pretty close over the top of the cargo pod and it will scoop it up.

You have to hit the cargo with the lower front of your ship, though.

The scoop (fuel scoop) ingests space flotsam in the quadrant shown by the green highlight here.

i've always found that the most sure fire way of picking up stuff is to fly towards it and try to keep it between the middle of the radar screen and the bottom of the targetting sights.

This will vary now that the cockpit viewpoint varies from one ship type to the next. So for some ships you have to aim to have the cargo almost pass underneath in order to scoop.

Incidentally, a high speed piracy method is to sit *right* behind your victim (I mean right behind - in his exhaust flame) and harrass him until he starts dumping cargo. It will emerge in a nice line behind the ship and go straight into your scoop. The best bit is his escorts will sometimes miss you with their lasers and hit him!

You're clearly aiming for the Oolite Bastard Hall of Fame.

The question is, do you go on to destroy your victim even when they've dumped their cargo for you, just to get hold of the extra 30c worth of gold they had stashed away for emergencies? I know I do!

Occasionally the cargo hoovering approach can go wrong when the victim tries evasive action at the same time. If you're not careful you either end up chasing after cargo moving faster than your top speed, or else you get a canister smack in the face.

The image isn't showing, I have very little success in scooping, I keep scratching the paintwork, so it would be really helpful.

I've learned not to be sitting right behind a Python when it blows up, because then I get all the canisters smack in the face. I tend not to live long after that happens
