Oolite Bulletins

I can't be sure if this only applies to the linux port or not, but wouldn't it make sense to merge your saved game and personal Addons folders into one directory (preferably ~/.Oolite)?

Not only would this make backing up your Oolite files easier, it would remove a redundant folder from my already cluttered home directory...

I hate how 'nix programmers use that practice to avoid cluttered home directory's. It's not like I don't notice the disk space disappearing, or fail to notice the clutter when I have to 'view hidden files' to get at the data.

The file-browser should let you save where you like, so if you choose to use ~/.Oolite and delete the other directory feel free.

Me I have a Mac, so I only have to put up with this ~/.fshtofflpopf! with badly-ported 'nix games.

View hidden files? That's what the terminal is for...

Seriously though, .files/directories are generally used to hold configuration info that shouldn't be fiddled with unless you know what you're doing. For most users, as long as the application and/or installer knows where to find it, it's not a problem.

Heh. I run linux at home, but work exclusively on Macs at work (we have 5 dual G5's and a couple of dual G4's at the moment). OS X isn't innocent of this either y'know... I wish I had a dollar for every spurious ._ file I've cleaned out of an archive or data transfer from a Mac. Then I could afford a G5 (or two) to run at home...

... and what's with the missing /etc, /bin, /sbin, /var, /dev, et cetera, when you use Finder, eh? Even spotlight won't own up to the existence of them, in it's default setup, on my machine. Mind you, all those directories with their three-letter names are so-o-o untidy, aren't they? And it's not like there's anything important in there.

Be fair. For the vast majority of all users, they’d only be confusing. And you can use Go->Go to Folder… to open them in the Finder.

What, you mean like all those .__MAC_OSX files that the Apple developers put in there when they badly ported ... oh, wait

The oolite-saves directory really is redundant now the file browser does directories. Actually, I need to look at improving the Oolite-Linux browser, even though it's only Ahruman who's complained about it sucking so far.

As I mentioned above, I'd like to keep my saved games and user specific addons in the same folder... unfortunately, the browser can't see hidden directories.

I'm not suggesting you make ALL hidden directories visible (Giles does have a point), but perhaps a path entry box in addition to the browser would work.
