Alternativ escape capsule models

Post by Shipbuilder »

I was wondering if there is any demand for some new escape pod models.

I was thinking of producing a variety of different designs and making the Wings 3D models and/or .dat files plus a basic texture file for each available.

The texture files would probably be a flat metallic grey colour, (Otherwise it would take me for ever as I take ages to texture models), which could then be edited by whoever downloads them if they wish to add additional detail.

Who knows maybe we could even have a gallery of alternatively textured pods.

Good idea.

Might give it a go myself.

One thought, they don't need to be triangular in shape.

Coffin-shaped might not be appropriate though

Actually that thought had occured to me as a means of escaping "creditors", hide yourself in one of the coffins in the Tionisla Graveyard in a stasis field.

Or any other shape that you can use as your basic cockpit layout. In theory, the escape capsule simply is your cockpit, which gets thrown out wholesale when you push the button. This way you don't need to crawl through your ship while it's breaking up in order to reach the capsule first.

But, why are there than windows in ships if the escape pod has no windows at all?? :?

The classic answer would be that there are no windows in ships. Whatever appears to be windows is either (a) part of the hull structure, like solar cells or something like that, (b) part of the paintwork, in an attempt to make some ships more anthropomorphic, or (c) part of the release mechanism for the escape capsule, perhaps a hinged platform to which it's mounted.

Indeed it is generally accepted that the ships do not have cockpit windows, and considering the size of our ships any windows would be small to the point of not being clearly visible except as a spot of light should the room behind the window be lit.
Having said that I think crew quarters etc may have windows as the crew would like to be able to see out and enjoy any views, so all my ships have a few small windows.

Hmm... there is a cockpit window in my ship, as it happens!

Or is it the "Optical Sensor Array"?

<chuckles> Nope... it's a wall-sized pane of glassteel!

Of course, now who is going to pick this one up. First luxury yacht with all facilities in Oolite. Swimming pool under a steel glass conservatory.

I really don't give this much thought. One part of my brain acknowledges that there are inconsistencies within size and geometry in Oolite, the other part of my brain observes that Oolite looks good and that game play works. The latter one tends to win when I play.

Externally-mounted shower cubicle and head - all glassteel, of course?

I'll have one of those (as soon as I finish the loft conversion).

Isn't this thread supposed to be about escape capsules? :? :)
