Planet textures compatibility confusion

I'm trying to make my oolite as pretty and diverse as possible.
Are Deep Horizons Systems, Povray planets, and Famous planets all compatible?
Is there a certain technique to getting them all running and making sure that they do not conflict with eachother in any way?
It seems info is scattered about. The wiki was a little helpful but not totally. It said DH and Famous were compatible, but what about Povray? plus one of the links for a famous planets update was broken on the wiki. It's all a bit confusing, can anyone shed light for a newbie like me? If these three are not totally compatible, which one would you consider the the most beautiful or the most diverse?
Also, does DH systems already contain system redux1 within it? Or will I benefit from having both installed? Couldn't find a clear answer on the wiki or readmes, just that it's an expansion.
I also read in an older thread that Deep Horizon might turn main planets into gas giants which could screw with Planetfall OXP. is this true or is this outdated info?
thank you

Povray Planets has over 1000 cube-mapped textures in the collection, and never repeats the same one twice in the same galaxy. The other OXPs contain a few dozen comparatively poor-quality textures. It's a chalk and cheese comparison. The download size might be prohibitive if you're on a wireless ISP like me. If so, try System Demux.

Famous Planets is going to be in the next povray sets. The textures are already downloadable. The best you can do is to download the Povray sets with the Famous Planets set included. I will soon send some descriptions to Submersible. Hope this helps

Thanks for the info. What about if I want multiple planets in each system and the different colored suns that Deep Horizon offers. Can I combine Povray planets and DH so I always get the Povray planets as the main planet and the DH systems to provide multiple other planets and colored suns?

This does help, thanks. So will the POVray sets for Galaxy 1 and 2 be replaced with sets that have the Famous Planets integrated, and then the rest of the POV ray planets would remain?

System Demux has the best quality textures of the multiple planet adding OXPs. There's plenty of variation of the sky (star colour and number etc.) built in, you don't need any OXP for that. Read this recent discussion about messing with the sky settings:-

I looked at the system Demux wiki (
http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/System ... 8Oolite%29 ) and the screenshots don't show anything particularly hi res looking... They look kind of blurry which is surprising considering the advertised resolution.. the Deep horizons systems looked higher res to me when I had it installed.. Is the wiki just out of date or something?
You say I don't need any OXP for different colored suns, but then why does it seem like every system I go to has a bright white sun in it? I'm not talking about background stars, mind you, but the sun closest to the planet. How can I get different colored suns, like the yellow sun we have near earth, or red suns, or blue suns, while maintaining mostly white background stars?

See this item:
Submersible released set 1 with the FP planets included already:
submersible wrote:Wildeblood wrote:pagroove wrote:I did give you full permission to convert my textures to cube maps and integrate and even distribute them into your package.
Sorry to be a nuisance but this is only valid for Galaxy 1/2. So maybe the easiest solution is:
1. to take my textures (you have full permission for that)
2. resize them as you see fit
3. convert them to cube maps
4. copy the converted cube mapped Famous Planets textures into your packages for Galaxy 1 and 2.
5. redistribute the packages for galaxy 1 and 2.
...I can as an alternative give a description to the existing Famous Planets 2.5. users that they must simply copy the textures from Famous Planets into the Povray texture directories for Galaxy 1 and 2...
PAGroove, Submersible,
Could one or other, or both of you, or someone's brother, hairdresser or cat, or anyone you have already shared them with,
please make the
cube-mapped Famous Planet textures available for download?
http://swarm.perlide.org/static/Povray_ ... -06-24.zip - Merged FP + povray planets for galaxy1 , ~650MB - largely untested - does not include descriptions.

The suns are very subtly 'hued', as it happens, but I don't think you can actually colour the suns fully/differently (someone will know). You can tinker with the background star colours - see
this thread. If you're gonna start tinkering with core plists (such as
planetinfo.plist
), it's best to create a folder called
Config
in your
AddOns
folder, make a copy of whichever plist, drop it into your newly-created
Config
folder and tinker with it there - it will override the core plist. Use a good text editor (
Notepad++ is free and highly recommended), and remember to restart Oolite with the shift key held down 'til the spinning Cobra appears after any changes.

You guys are incredibly helpful. Thank you so much! I can already tell this game community is the best I've ever been apart of.
If anyone knows if it indeed possible to enhance the "hue" of the suns, I'd like to know how to do it.
Edit- with the above link to the Combo of Povray/famous planets for Galaxy 1, it mentions the descriptions are not included. Is this referring to the funny descriptions on the system info screen?

The sky colour settings affect the local star ("the sun"), background stars and nebulas; you can't change just one. There's plenty of variation built in, and setting specific values will only limit the variety, not increase it

I'd never noticed before that phpBB can give different addresses to the same topic.

Yes.

It was not exactly the same topic. The first link is to the topic, the second to a specific entry to the topic. The last you get when clicking on the small document icon on the top right of the entry. (just before 'posted')

The original Famous Planets shipped with a lot of extended descriptions for planets (on the system info screen). The merged PP/FP galaxy 1 has no descriptions. I think pagroove and I will arrange to release them separately at some point.
As to compatibility - the Povray Planets base OXP attempted to provide a worldscript which would co-operate with FP and System Redux. Honestly - it's pretty badly written and generally does not work correctly.
DH does provide scripts a mechanism to identify systems which should not have the main planet textured , allowing for extra planets in conjunction with alternatively textured main planets. This is not currently supported by the Povray Planets base OXP.
