A Fed, a Browncoat, and a smuggler dock at a space bar...

First shot at Oolite fic. This is (obviously) based on OXP ships I have flying around in my Ooniverse.

The three gentleman at the bar seemed like the most unlikely friends. I could see where two of them might have worked together, but the third... Happy Eye, his uniform practically screamed government.

I sidled up to the bar, my brown hood kept carefully over my eyes, as I carefully eavesdropped. A few moments of listening soon tipped me to their common thread. These guys were flat-out loony.

The one in the fancy duds was raving on about some mumbo-jumbo having to do with gravity and wormholes, as if witchspace hadn't been around for Eye knows how long. I shook my head as I tapped into the bounty boards, looking for a lowkey job.

The other two were simply sitting and listening, their eyes expertly casing the folks in the bar. They, they definitely belonged here, nutters or not. Even if they didn't quite have the ruthless air of the average bounty hunter, their shifty eyes screamed contrabandista.

Having found a job suitably lowkey, I paid my tab and launched, paying no more mind to the odd trio. That... was my first mistake.

And here it is!

In hindsight, I should've known better than to ignore those guys. But hey, I had a close encounter with the Ghost Cobra recently. And we all know that screws with things one way or another. Turns out my decision to inject away from the dogpile of Vipers only postponed the full impact of its passage.

I had just picked out my newest ship, the Genesis-class Not a Moving Target, and was idly flying around Chart Three picking up mass quantities of agricultural goods and taking the odd elimination. Still a green recruit in the eyes of hunters, I was slowly working my way through.

The second time I saw the loony trio, I truly began to realize just how bloody cursed I'd become. I'd just arrived at Esmaonbe and was preparing to jump to Lezaer. The two systems so close to each other they took practically no fuel. It tickled my sense of humor to open a witchspace hole for no gas.

While there was no fuel cost, my main tanks were on the empty side, and I didn't feel like using my aux-tank. I sat back and had a cup of Starbugs as my AutoSkim computer did the tedious work. After the fuel scoops shut down, I punched the witchjump switch and waited, only to curse as a cruiser swept by at the last second, followed closely by two vessels smaller than my own. The weird ships swept through my wormhole just before I did.

Then...
Warning: Witchspace Drive Malfunction.

Oooooh slag.

Happy to have a new story, and I particularly like how you're feeding it in bite-sized chunks. Just what I have time for at the moment :)

It's how the inspiration comes... No conscious plan. Glad it works for ya!

I'm thinking about doing this with my second piece. Mostly Deadly is turning into a massive beast that I can't put down and publish.

!m!

Interesting use of a forum.
Did you know that Charles Dickens wrote pretty much all of his work to be published episodically in Newspapers?

Interesting, reads like a P.I. detective novel.
An unusual take on the subject matter but it seems to fit rather well.
