I'm not sure how to work out the size of objects, but here's the turret in obj format (converted back to obj format with the dat2obj.py script) that you can load into your 3d program

It's lost all it's UV data, but the structure of the model is intact

@ Griff and Commander McLane - Thanks guys.

I've just started to play around in Wings 3D and will create a few different designs however have a look at the screenshot below of the first draft of a possible new turret.

Any comments suggestions as always are welcome.

Once I have modelled a few more I will issue some more teaser shots.

Nice turret... and a good wiki page too.

Cheers EV.

With regard to the Wiki page I couldn't have done it without the help and advice from the BB :)

Turrets switch and tilt to follow their targets (at least within their "field of view"). Hence whilst your model above is lovely, it may not be so good as a turret. It would look better as a sub-entity laser I think.

Turrets themselves usually tend to be more spherical to allow for the rotation, sometimes with a mount as a separate entity to join them to their mother craft.

That's a good point Thargoid - I know it would be a good idea posting some early concepts for comments.

I’ll reassign some of the models I have as lasers and look to develop some turrets taking these comments onboard.

I do have some ideas based more spherical designs that I will have a play around with and post pictures of shortly.

Whilst on the subject of turrets and lasers I did have this design ready to post so perhaps this could be a laser cannon or maybe I will look to house the turret on a spherical type base.

I need to have a bit of think about this and play around with the model in Wings 3D

I'm liking these new turret designs, much more interesting than the standard ball turret. Although ball turrets are common in science fiction:

A couple of other, more spherical, designs including an Oolite take on Pleb's giant boob nipple gun

Turret? Nuh-uh. Scale it up to the size of a dodo station, call it something like, oh, I dunno, "the Death Star". Can I put in my order for one right now, thanks?

Yes I would like one of these too please, maybe with a docking bay so I can dock with it?

"That's no moon..." 8)

Lol, by the way though excellent turret designs. But I am deadly serious about scaling it up like Wildeblood said, this could be an awesome idea! *cue Imperial March music*

Another idea I had for the boob nipple turret was that even if they were scaled up slightly, they could be used as oribital defense stations. Wouldn't even have to have docking bays, they could be automated satelites used for defending planets from Thargoid invasions. But I would really love a giant version as a 'death star' like station!

@Wildeblood and Pleb – If you want a copy of the model that’s no problems. If so just let me know what diameter you want it scaled up to.

Also do you want the Wings 3D file or are you looking for the .dat and texture files instead ?

Well if you could scale it up to about the size of a dodo station like Wildeblood said that'd be awesome. And both unless that's going to be a problem, just I'd like to see it in game as it is and then maybe modify it if neccesary. Like I said, if it looks good I'd want to put a docking port in it so having the Wings 3D files would be a bonus. But only if that is acceptable with yourself! Many thanks indeed!
