Please, how can I see incoming messages after they are received? I tried to use the " ' " key but nothing happened. I'm using the combat hud... Thanks for any help.

It's the ` key - not ' - on my keyboard that's top left, with the ¬ symbol on it also.

Right between the energy bomb and escape capsule keys. Yeah, that's a convenient place for it.

Of course everything depends on your keyboard type, which depends on the country you're living in.

Yep  But, not on the (european) mac, where the game was originally developed on. There it is at a very convenient and safe place at the lower left.

Well, I tried this key, but didn't work... I use a notebook sony vaio, vpc-f112hb, with windows and ubuntu. Oolite is in ubuntu here. My keyboard configuration only says "Português Brasil", it has the "/" with the "Q" key. The " ' " is well where you said, between the energi bomb and the escape capsule... but it does not work, when I press it, nothing happens.

You could use [wiki]Keyconfig[/wiki] to write a new keyboard configuration. That way you could choose a communications key that is more convenient located on your keyboard.

On my copy of the oolite reference sheet it says it's the ' ~ ' (which doesn't seem to render..it's the wavy line thing).

That's got useful links.
Previous Compass Target key_prev_compass_mode | 124 7C | Oolite V1.77 or later.
I'm looking forward to that. I do <shift>-\ every so often and expect it to work.
Cycle through external views key_custom_view v 118 76 v
<Shift>-v would be good to cycle back through views.

And, getting back on-topic:
Switch off HUD o Switches off the HUD.
needs to display a Comms message: "HUD turned off".

What good would that do? Think it through, SandJ. :D

Are the comms messages part of the HuUD, then?

Well some sort of "The screen's gone blank 'cos you turned it off; press 'o' to get it back" message would help idiots like me.
