Greetings Commanders and Oolites.

Recently I have been watching the Stargate Universe series (season 1 within 2 days) Has Anyone considered designing the Destiny from SGU. I think it would be an interesting ship to do. it would have to be a Behemoth could have something equivalent to the Captured thargoid drones which would be representative of the shuttles on Destiny turreted lasers. main thing it HAS to fuel by sunskimming (or as in the show actually flying Through the star. I would write the Add-On myself but I lack the skill.

Hi Moglagh, welcome to the BB, friendliest one this side of Riedquat.

Not writing OXPs myself (except a silly one like the [wiki]Beer Cooler[/wiki]) I can't help you with your request but if someone else is sufficiently inspired it might not take too long.

Hi, and welcome.
We already have several 'TV' ships available (Enterprise, Firefly to name but two), and it might be that someone is already secretly working on a Destiny :)
The modeling would be quite a challenge as she is a big ship with lots of 'fiddly' detail.
As to writing the OXP yourself, Destiny would be too big a project for a first attempt, but in fact OXP making is not as hard as you might think. Yes, there is a lot to learn, but I think most of us started 'from scratch' with no experience and little knowledge...it's surprising how quickly you pick things up, and how rewarding it is. Why not choose a simpler project and have a go...there is plenty of help and advice vailable here.

Hi Moglagh glad to have you onboard.

As Smivs has suggested oxp writing, (The simpler ones at least), are not too difficult to put together once you have spent a little time researching.

You'll also find that this board is very helpful with any queries......I have been asking quite a few questions myself and have had a great response with lots of help and advice.

Are you aware what software you will need to prepare a ship oxp ?

If not generally to start off with you will need the following:-

1) A 3D modelling software package such as Wings 3D or Blender (I use Wings myself but either would be fine).
2) A graphic manipulation package such as Gimp which can be down loaded free.
3) A text editor such as VIM (Don’t use notepad).
4) The python software (Don’t install the latest versions i.e. 3.2.2 or 3.2.3 as this doesn’t work with Oolite). As far as I remember I think the version you need is Version 2.7.3 – Can anyone confirm this ? If not I will check what I have installed when I get home and advise. Python can be downloaded here
http://www.python.org/getit/
There is also a great simple example for creating a ship oxp which was, if I recall correctly, produced by Giles Williams called the brick or brick ship. Does anyone know where the download link for this is ?
Note - Wings 3D, Blender, Gimp and VIM are all available for free download.

I have checked and it is python version 2.7.3 that you need.

v2.6.x should be fine as well. Only v3.x won't work with the converters.

The Enterprise? Is it an oxp itself? or is it part of another oxp? Where can I find it? Thanks.

Maybe there should be some freighters moving cargo from the planets and into the stations.

I assume that's what the shuttles do. None of the 'normal' ships have the ability to land on/launch from planets (unless you use an OXP  ).

That's exactly the purpose of Shuttles, Worms, and Transporters (in case of the latter the hint is already in the name  ).
