What is a reasonable OXP download size

The most recent Povray Planets weighed in at over 300Mb - with 256 textures which are still not at a particularly high resolution.

I miss the options of 10 and 50 MB. Not everybody has fast internet. Last week I saw a woman on German television that fell for an advertisement of a cable company that offered high speed connections to here town. But when se got it, it was just as slow as her old isdn connection. After a lot of telephone calls they had to admit that her part in town had no infrastructure for fast internet and she had to turn back to isdn as that worked more reliable. Almost criminal to sell stuff they can't even deliver.

Well, yes - but for a fully textured Ooniverse ?
Is it not like some (surprisingly many ?) have no shaders available, so we just have to accept that we will not profit from that ?

Hm, I think the "criminal" depends on their reaction to complaints, before someone involves the media.
And even if the "broadband" crawls like isdn, it still may be advantageous over isdn, as in no cheap isdn flatrates being offered.
In Germany then-ISP Arcor had been famous for offering ADSL for lines on the edge of functionality, where D-Telekom would just say "no!". So for me it meant a whacky connection, with sometimes lots of connection losses, hardly ever able to use all of the 1024/128 kbit advertised.
But it still was better and a lot cheaper than using my 33.6k modem. And on complaint they were of the opinion I might inmediately quit the contract for DSL, but not for phone - so that was kind of tricking me, but I could have read the contracts even more attentively before signing them. :|

However, a decent provider will tell you "sorry, not available in your area" before you even get to signing the contract. That's what mine did (luckily, they said "yes, it's available"; I did however get the "sorry" reply when I tried to opt for 50Mbit instead of 16, because the super fast connection isn't yet widespread available).

So do I. It's not that I couldn't download it, but more out of a sense of perspective. An OXP several times the size of the original game seems just odd to me. Which I guess means that I'm no customer for a fully individually textured galaxy. On the other hand I'm perfectly happy with System Redux.

For my own OXPs, many of them tweak Oolite's workings which doesn't require huge download sizes. I think they start with under 10KB. Anarchies has under 7MB which seemed huge to me at the time. Personally I won't release anything bigger than the maximum upload size for a free box.com account, which is 20MB, I think.

submersible,

the Famous_Planets_v2.5.1.oxp is +/- 632 Mb
I do not find the size of the oxp a problem
if it is going to big split it in 8 parts

very nice work as soon as it is released it will be in my AddOns directory

I don't mind downloading a huge file once, but updates have to be delivered as deltas.

I have reasonably fast internet, and unlimited traffic, so for me it doesen't matter. However, splitting data and script code, like YAH does, is probably a good way to do it when possible.

Commander McLane is right. Release your oxp in pieces no bigger than 25MB to allow for the free box.net max of 25MB file size.

Do you mean free to download or free to upload? I have a server to host the downloads from , at the current size of these textures 25MB would be about 4 planets worth.

It will need to be as big as it needs to be.

Quite so. Start at the beginning, end at the end, include all that is necessary, and nothing that is not.

(Messing about with the ambient light level in the universal settings is not necessary, BTW.)

Why should any- and everyone go by the restrictions of one specific filehoster ?

No matter how many like dropbox how much, you never know if tomorrow it won't be sold to Amazon and subsequently be rendered unusable.

And did you not learn to despise these files split into 10 or so rar-partfiles, that may or may not prove unable to be unpackaged if 1 part is missing ?

What snork said. And for extra emphasis: Please no split archives.

For something of this magnitude, one would expect an oxp that gives a uniquely textured universe to be pretty damn big! So don't worry about it. I do agree with a separate oxp per galaxy, though!
