Codepage quirks on Wiki (ASC page) [SOLVED]

Hi all...

[maybe this should be more specifically directed to Eric Walch and JazHaz, who've done the latest editions on the page...]

On http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Advanc ... onal_Buoys, I've noticed two oddities related to code pages.

1. the symbol for "Galactic Navy SECOM Station" will not display correctly - I've rotated the Firefox View / Character Encoding options thru a number of entries, Unicode / UTF-8 included, and none will let it display anything meaningful. And, whenever anyone tries to fix this, will he please add the missing "C" to "SecCom Station" also.

2. While testing encoding alternatives for #1, I noticed that the "Free Trade Zone" entry shows some strange characters under ISO-8859-1 , ISO-8859-15 and Windows-1252 . Unicode / UTF-8 seems to be the only CP which lets it display correctly.

All of the other entries seem to display correctly, regardless of CP.

Cheers :D

UTF-8 is the correct code page, so nothing else will work. If UTF-8 isn't working either, that suggests that none of the fonts installed on your computer contain the correct Unicode star character. Which OS are you using?

The dashes for that entry are Unicode encoded em-dashes (unlike the 'minus' symbols used for every other entry). So if viewed in the wrong CP, they get interpreted wrongly. UTF-8 should auto-detect on any properly working browser, so that isn't a problem.

I've added 'X' to the list for Xeptatl Society stations (Xeptatl's Sword OXP) and corrected SECOM to SecCom for Galactic Navy. Hope that's OK.

Thx for the help cim ! :D

I"m using a fully updated Win XP SP3... I've googled a bit and couldn't find the proper way to list the FULL NAMES of my fonts (other than simply DISPLAYing them under the Control Panel  ). Not sure if it will help, but here's a list of my installed font filenames:

Fair with me  - thx for clarifying. :D

Cheers

Opening the fonts folder in control panel is about it.

That seems pretty short, and I can't see the common Unicode windows fonts. Try installing the fonts from
http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/freefont/freefon ... 919.tar.gz which should give you decent Unicode coverage.

The symbol is a five-pointed star - "★". It displays fine on my Windows XP SP3 laptop, under Chrome and Firefox.

EDIT: added the star ★ character

I would expect that any current browser supports unicode. When the font is not given correct It can be a missing font containing the character. But the star should be pretty common. I see 48 fonts on my computer that contain the star symbol "★".

I am not an unicode expert, and most fonts only contain some of the unicode symbols. However, on my computer there is one called "Arial Unicode Regular" that contains quite a bunch of them, so if the chosen display font hasn't the character, it should switch to this one. At least I hope it works that way.

Hi everybody - thx for the massive and supersonic help !!! :D

This suggestion SOLVED my issue:

The 5-point star is now showing correctly, both in the Wiki and in the forum (I had reported it on another thread and already added a 'SOLVED' flag over there).

It seems (can't remember for sure) that when I installed Windows on my netbook - which a meager 4Gb SSD unit for C: - I made a lot of trimmings to keep install size short, and a bunch of fonts might have been left out (and hadn't been missed for about 3 years... )

Thx a lot everybody. I'm editing the thread title to add 'SOLVED'.

Cheers

No, it's NOT OK... you skipped the last 'T' on Xeptatl.
