RELEASE: Introducing the Snapper

Here she is, in all it's fat....erm, fine beauty. I came up with the name when the design I was working on started looking suspiciously like a turtle. Not sure what I was thinking about to make that happen, but there you go. Anyway, it's a VERY large ship, able to move at 250LM, while hauling around 760 tons of cargo. The non-player version comes with six SunBatMkII-escort escorts (is there an echo in here?). I would sure like to make it possible for a player version to have the SunBatMkII-escort escorts...., but I haven't figured how to do that yet. Maybe in a couple hunderd years. I have included a zip file within the Snapper folder of the SunBatMkII oxp, just in case you wish for that option to be inconcluded. It isn't necessary if you don't want the SunBatMkII. Hope you like it. :D

Oh, one more thing, the canopy/cockpit/control bubble was designed using a UVSphere, and someone commented that it didn't look right on the ship. That it should be smoothed out. I couldn't figure out how to do that. I tried smothing the vertices on it, but I'm not sure that really made much difference. Whatever, if you know how, feel free to do so. Link, then pics.

Alligned the lasers a little more accurately. New pics. Smoothed the cockpit canopy. :)

The Snapper itself doesn't have a fuel scoop, but the SunBat escort oxp I included with the Snapper does, and it is fixed in that oxp now.

It was me who suggested smoothing the dome - there's a way within the dat file to create a smoothed group of polygons, this tells the game engine to light the facets differently, thus giving the impression of a smoothed surface.

I can't remember exactly how to do it (any more) but one of the modelling gurus should be able to help.

(Ahruman told me how to do it when I built Tycho 8 so I'll have a look and see if I kept the instructions)

Follow the discussion here: https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.ph ... 2&start=30

that carries over onto the next page - you'll see that Tycho 8 had a faceted dome and then later a smooth cockpit dome.

Thanks, DaddyHoggy. I tried the link you posted, but all I get is

. If it's a matter of changing the .dat file some, I'm very interested in it. :)

Just downloaded to see if you have a smooth=yes in your shipdata.plist file, but confused a bit, because your zip file contains a Snapper.oxp and a SunBatMkIIv1.3.oxp as a zip file. Is this intentional?

Yes. The non-player version has the option of SunBatMkII escorts, and though it isn't necessary to use the ship, I thought I would include a separate zip file of the SunBatMkII in case the ship is wanted, but not yet downloaded. It is included in the shipdata, as well as the .png of the SunBatMkII, and SunBatMkII-escort in Textures. The .dat file of the SunBatMkII is also included in the Models file. I should have explained that better. I'll add it to the listing. Thanks for the heads up. :)

Really, I came out and went back in using that link and it works fine - odd...

Try here (which is the start of the thread): http://oolite.aegidian.org/bb/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8022 ("My first ship" in Outworld)

Sorry, but I'm getting the same message as above. I've run into this problem several times on the forum when tried to click in to view a certain topic that was carried on years, or even months earlier. Not sure what it's all about. Is there a way I could run a search? I'll try searching for anything under "Outworld".

Type this into Google:

Code: Select all

"My first ship" site:aegidian.org/bb/
The 2nd search should be mine - the one in Outworld.

I don't understand why you have such issues.

His browser isn't passing the "Referrer" HTTP header?

I don't know either, but I got the Snapper bridge bubble to smooth out. I think it was Okti that suggested putting '"smooth" = yes;' in shipdata.plist, so I tried it. The canopy looks smooth from what I can tell, but that was in the Debug Console. I'll the ship out for a spin, and get some exterior shots.

Or maybe Mandoman has inadvertently sent his board preferences so older topics are not displayed.

Okay, you're right, that did the trick. I've been perusing the thread, and from what I can tell, it's all based on Wings 3D. I use Blender, so it is a slightly different. I see that the normals needed flipping on a few surfaces of Tycho 8. That's pretty norma (no pun intendedl. That adding an "S" at the top of the page of the mtl file is interesting, though. Gonna have to give it a try. Thanks, DaddyHoggy, and Capt. Murphy. I find it interesting that Ahruman is against using the "smooth = yes" option. I think he was explaining it, but it went right over my head. What else is new.

Look at the underneath of the snapper in the bottom of your posted pictures - it is very bright in one corner near where it joins the camo hull, but very dark in the far corner - this is what Ahruman meant and why overall smoothing doesn't necessarily work - that flat surface on the underside of the hull should be presenting a single angle to the sun and therefore should be evenly lit, but it's not. For your ship, where the engines and the dome stand out when they're not smoothed, this may still be the better option for you.
