Transfering asaved commander

Potted history

Played Elite on the Commodore 64, till 3 pm for months back in the 80T's.

Found this last month, Brilliant, got mrs moaning at me for staying up all hours playing games again.

Anyway the question, yesterday down loaded the Beta 1.75.3 (?) I've deleted it because I cannot transfer my saved commander to later OOLite, is there a way to do this please, rather than start from scratch again ?.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi Mekon, and welcome to the boards! Friendliest bb this side of Riedquat, or your money back ...

Save files should be transferrable between different versions of the game. There might be problems with some OXPs (i.e. if your commander is flying an OXP ship from a version that's not compatible with 1.7.3, you'll need to sort that out). But to let people help you sort the problem, can you let us know what operating system you're using (Mac, Windows, Linux)? That should help us* locate your difficulties.

* By "us" I mean "someone else on the boards with more nous than me, probably".

Normally within the oolite.app folder in the game installation directory, there is a folder called oolite-saves. Your save games should be in there, as files with the name of your save game commander and extension .oolite-save .

These are just text files, and can be moved between installations of the game or backed up like any other file.

Note if you're on Linux then the installation folder may be hidden (and its exact location will depend on how you installed the game, with root privs or as just a user). For Mac I can't comment as I've never owned one, installed the game on one nor seen it running on one.

On the Mac your saved games are in a folder called "oolite-saves", created on your home folder.

Do you mean transfer your Elite commander into Oolite? If so, you cannot, they are not compatible.

Hi Mekon, and welcome.
Your saves, and AddOns where the OXPs are stored are seperate from the main game files and should not be affected by upgrading to the latest version of Oolite.
1.75.3 is the latest (and most reliable) version so should be used. As disembodied suggested if you're using an OXP ship it might be that you need to upgrade that OXP to the latest version as a lot of old OXPs won't work with 1.75.3, but nearly all the OXPs have been updated and do work. Check on the OXP table to make sure your OXPs are up to date. Are you getting a big yellow question mark when you try to load your commander?
If in any doubt, post your latest log here so we can check it over for you.

OK, playing version 1.73.4 using O/p Windows 7 Home Premium.

Have attempted to copy the Saves folder to 1.75. version.

Opening the OOLite in 1.75 no saves folder was showing. Ship currently being used is a Cobra 3 with loads of xtras

LCB, ECM, EB, FS, XEU, DC, WDFI, STE, ASC, ANA, TSXM, SB, MSE, XHS, FC, FML, all other lasers beam.

OK, if you're flying a Cobby 3 it won't be a problem with the ship, although you have got three OXPs which are incompatible with the earlier version of Oolite you're currently using.
As I mentioned before when you upgrade you shouldn't need to touch saves and OXPs at all as they are seperate from the main game installation. Have you perhaps tried to copy the saves and put them in the wrong place?
Also, when you start the game you are asked if you want to 'Load Previous Commander (Y/N)'. What happens when you press 'Y'?

Maybe start a new game and save that to find out in which folder it is saving and copy your old files in that folder. Even old files from very old oolite versions should be working. With 1.75 it should also work is your save file used a ship that is not installed in the current version.

That is the default location, but it remembers the last used location. For me that current location is somewhere deep into my home folder structure.

All,

Thanks for your suggestions, problem solved.

Copied 1.73 game to CD and uninstalled from PC.

Down loaded 1.75.3, then copied Saved Commander from the 1.73 CD to 1.75.3 on PC.

Note

NON of the folders would open in 1.75.3 while both games were on PC and could not copy save from OOLite 1.73 to OOLite 1.75.

Cheers

The Mekon

Is Dan Dare on here?

Do you mean transfer your Elite commander into Oolite? If so, you cannot, they are not compatible.
Is there really no way of transmogrifying an Elite saved Commander into an Oolite equivalent?

There is, but it is by no means automatic. It is full manual labor and you have to basically reconstruct a save file based on the status of the old Elite commander.

... Which rather implies that someone, somewhere has documented (or reverse-engineered) all the features of the (binary) save game from original Elite.
Any idea where? I'd guess there's a "documentation" blob somewhere in the GIT(-a-like) repository, for the code-masochists?

There must be something, but I don't know where. I was thinking more along the lines of "OK, which system are we in, which galaxy, how many credits we have etc". Essentially taking an Oolite savefile, going line by line and changing whatever is needed to reconstruct the older status,
