Best All-round ship?

Post by Mjay »

After weeks with a Cobra MkIII, then Boa II I finally had enough cash to upgrade to something decent.

My goal was a shiny new Morrigan but I couldn't find one for sale anywhere. I eventually found a Vortex & my life is transformed. It is utterly utterly amazing.

Is this the best all-round ship available or is there something even more awesome out there that I havn't found yet?

The Caduceus Omega (http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Caduceus) is a pretty good ship, but hard to find. If you like the Vortex, go ahead and keep it. Ships are very much a matter of personal taste, a ship one person likes may be hated by almost everyone else.

Hi Mjay - welcome to the forums - the vortex is a lovely ship, Svengali will be pleased with your choice. However, I'd like to point out that an Iron Assed Cobby 3 is the best core ship there is, which in the hands of a good pilot, will out fly and outgun a significant portion of all the OXP ships.

You meant Thargoid, of course.

Indeed! Welcome aboard, Mjay!

Hello Mjay, welcome onboard .-)
The Vortex is a pretty tough ship (created by Thargoid) with a flight behaviour that feels really natural. Powerful, heavily armed, with a big energy reserve, fast and with a huge cargo hold.

*sigh* it's not my decision .-)

   Oh, Lord, I'm really not having a good night tonight... Not enough coffee!

I misread Vortex and my caffeine neglected brain read Vector - which is of course a Svengali ship and is indeed, very lovely.

If it makes you feel any better I occasionally get the things mixed up, and I wrote the bloody thing ;)

But glad to hear of another satisfied Commander for the ship, makes it worthwhile :D

The Vortex is one of my favourites, as a way to build a good score probably cannot be beaten. However, it does not offer a way of picking up many contract offers or passengers.

For the contracts, perhaps try its' sister ship, the Maelstrom (in the same OXP).

Neither will allow passenger runs though, as they are incompatible with the Hypercargo system that both use.

Having tried many core and OXP ships, my favourites are still the Dragon M (my first Elite commander flies one) and the B-Wing (Star Wars ships OXP). Both are quick, zippy and have plenty of missile slots, and enough cargo space to make a few extra dollars if bounty hunting falls a little short. There are faster ships, more heavily armed ships, but these two can really take the knocks: Many of the more technically "Uber" ships fail and blow up after just a few good hits or lucky missiles. My commanders are frequently offered other, very pricey ships for sale but naah! I'm OK thanks!!
