Lenovo Laptop Problem

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I've been playing Oolite on my old Lenovo x60 running XP Sp3 for a while, decided to move it to my X61 running W7 x64.

I can start the app, can hear the sound but the window that opens just shows the application below.

I'm running the latest Laptop drivers for the X61

Thanks to all who have brought back a game I remember from childhood. (C64 tape version) although a friend had the BBC model B which was better.....

First off, welcome to the friendliest board this side of Riedquat.

Now, hmm, Intel Graphics, difficult when running Open GL they are. Probably need one of the Devs, but as a start, there seems to be an updated Graphics driver available here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_ ... pe=Drivers.

It's the same version, but a newer build. Not sure if it helps, but might be worth a try.

I would recommend a newer driver set. A quick search at Intel's site indicates that the latest version of the Win7 64bit drivers is 8.15.10.1930, maybe those will have a better chance?

Hi,

I thought that....

I have uninstalled the lenovo driver and installed the Intel one.

No luck...

The obvious setting for Windows 7 of running compatibility mode does not help.

Hi,

I ran a test of the openGL

http://www.ononesoftware.com/support/607/

Don't know if that helps

Very strange.

The following lines

Code: Select all

13:20:05.225 [rendering.opengl.gpuSpecific]: Matched GPU configuration "Intel GMA 900/950 family".
13:20:05.225 [rendering.opengl.shader.support]: Shaders are supported.
Are basically saying. Yep, I've recognised this card, and I'm setting the display options accordingly.

What happens when you run Oolite without any compatibility settings? Even though it's a 32 bits application, it shouldn't have any problems running in windows 7, 64 bits. At least it doesn't at this end... :(

Hi,

Whatever mode I try to start Oolite in, I get the music, and the frame around the outside of the Oolite window, and nothing else.

The area inside the grey frame shows the application / desktop behind the window.

Is there a way to start with minimal graphics, and turn on the advnaced functions once I can start the basic oolite.

Regards

Gordon

Maybe an idea could be to temporarily switch to older drivers? It is a long shot and chances are it won't work, but desperate situations call for desparate measures sometimes. I would also try more drivers from the Intel site, despite the warning about using OEM drivers preferrably.

One thing occurred to me. These graphics chips use system memory, right. Check BIOS settings and see if there anything you can change there (note down original settings before changing anything though). Amount of memory allocated to graphics maybe.

Hi,

If I switch back to Generic MS driver (open GL1.2 only) it works, very slow but it works.

Looks like a W7 x64 & OpenGL2 issue :(

Any way to force oolite to run in OpenGL 1.5 or something?

I suspect an Intel driver issue. I run Oolite on Win7 x64 with OpenGL 3.3.0 as reported in the Oolite log. So it's not a Win7 x64 and OpenGL thing.
However, I have an Nvidia Quadro graphics card on my laptop, and that makes me suspect the Intel graphics on your computer.

Hi,

Yes, a problem with Intel OpenGL support. Not getting anywhere with lenovo or Intel WRT newer drivers. :x

What I need now is a workaround to for oolite to force it not to try openGL2.0

If Oolite opens with the generic drivers, have you tried adjusting the settings there, (No shaders, etc) then exiting, and reinstalling the drivers. Actually, you can also install on a different computer, make your changes in settings and then copy the whole Oolite directory to another computer. This way you can test different settings in Oolite without installing different drivers all the time. Also see if full screen mode or window mode makes a difference.

This is very counterintuitive, but you might want to try something like virtualbox - their opengl implementation is sometimes better than the host machine's.

If you want to try that option, make sure that 3d accelleration is enabled for the virtual machine, install something relatively undemanding - xp for example if you have an old xp install disk lying around - inside the virtual machinge, then install the virtualbox extensions inside the virtual machine, and finally you should have a fully working Oolite inside the virtual machine itself.

'A bit' of a palaver, but should to do the trick... :)
