That the Winton Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk at Cambridge believes an IQ just outside one standard deviation below average – representing one eighth to one sixth of the population, depending how you interpret “low eighties” – is equivalent to “borderline deficient, marginally able to cope with the adult world” is rather troubling.

Agree with both of you.

Quoted professor is talking out of his borderline deficient backside anyway. 'Official' medical definition according to the WHO and adopted by the British Institute of Learning Disability for a mild learning disability includes a tested and age adjusted IQ between 50 and 70. In the 80's is as Ahruman says within a range that should and is considered normal by professionals who understand what they are talking about.

I just switched from IE to Camino and I can feel my IQ rising - slowly but steadily.

truthfully, i must say the recenter IEs have been a lot better. i was a devout Netscape Navigator man for years, due to IE having a rep as a security hazard. was forced into getting it for some OS updates tho and IE8 is pretty ok - mostly cos they stole a lot of Fkrfox's ideas. still prefer that browser, even tho some "features" are very annoying.

I'm on Chrome at home and IE9 at work. IE9 is ok actually, a huge improvement on IE7.
Cheers,
Drew.

Same here. I stay away from Microsoft. I use Chrome (I'm a Google person).

So the next question is - why such an elaborate hoax? Especially one, that once it was out in the mainstream, wouldn't stand up to scrutiny...

To highlight the prevalence of
churnalism, maybe? Or perhaps to raise the issue of browser élitism, which doesn't have it's own word yet ("brobbery"?). I remember an old online "IQ test" which asked endless inane question, page after page, and eventually gave you a score based on how long it took for you to give up in disgust ... I think I scored somewhere in the low 20s on that one (it was a slow day).
