I'm ☆ Deadly ☆

Went out to interstellar space to squish some bugs. Came back Deadly. I then had no fear as I flew to the station, and got some more kills on the way home. Here's my F5 screen:

Thanks for making such a great game! Now all I need to do is stay up all night and get to ★★★ E L I T E ★★★...

The gap between Deadly (2560) and Elite (6400) is a bit more than a night's worth of effort... even for a crack shot like yourself.

Congratulations nonetheless!

Right on Commander, although as DH mentioned, you're now on the long haul. :D

Thank you, DaddyHoggy and Smivs.
I need to estimate how long it would take to get to elite from where I am if I played Oolite 24/7. BRB...

Ok, my estimations are in. The figures are not exact, but you can count on me doing further research.

To get from 2,585 kills to 6,400 kills, playing 24/7, at the rate I'm going, it would take aprox. 6.358 days, or 152.6 hours. Nonstop.

Congrats, kitty boy. I can't wait to get there, myself. (But don't worry DH...I am NOT tweaking my save file for it! I never could bring myself to adjust the kill count.)

Good. No savefile editing. The only thing it's good for is testing ships, or if you want to keep a guy fugitive for a few years.

Congratulations!!

About savefile....

I have only looked into it. Never dared to change anything in it.
And has no intention either, as parts of the fun would go away.
At least for me.

I have noticed that it has some sort of control-mechanism. Counts bytes, or something, to create a checksum.
So - if you change it, isn't there some sort of protests then?

There are probably ways to cheat it with special oxp-s, but what happens if you just change something in it without special softwares?

Thank you, greenseng.
Savefiles do have a checksum, that check the most commonly edited parts of the savefile, including Kills, Credits, and Trumbles. All it does if it finds an error is put a cheat notice in the log and respawn any removed Trumbles. Nothing else. So you can get away with cheating, I guess.

Oh THAT'S why I couldn't remove the Trumbles back then.....

 Get away with cheating! According to my experiences in life you only get away with cheating if, and only if, it is seriously motivated.

But here it is more a question of cleaning up. There are some parts of the savefile that includes things from ships that are not more installed.
I am not talking about the list of ships you have used, but about other information that is not needed any more.

But... after a second thought... maybe I can learn something from it.
Maybe it is better to leave it in peace.

About ***ELITE*** .

I have reached those heights two or maybe three times. One or two in the ancient Elite and one time in First Encounter.
These times I didn't notice it. I rarely looked at the thing as it took so long time to become Deadly so I never expected to become Elite.
So when I suddenly saw it I wondered: where did this happen - and when?

When one becomes Elite there should of course be a built in function that - when you dock - includes firework, champagne and... well.. party, party, party.

Congrats Ryan! And good luck with the Elite status.

Any tips for new commanders? At the very least on how to aim better?

That's going to take quite a lot of coffee ...

You could try the Lave Academy OXP – it's got a shooting gallery.

Each ship has its own 'sweet spot', that precise position within the crosshairs where the laser actually hits. Normally, due to your view position this is one or two pixels below dead centre. Learn where that is and you'll be lethal.
Maybe find an asteroid field and try shooting them, then the boulders, then the splinters from ever greater distances. Once you've got your eye in, you will find moving targets much easier.

 Do you get kill points for the shooting gallery. If so, surly a bug!
