I know we have quite a few Scandinavians on the BB.

My thoughts with you all at this very sad and shocking time.

Sad and shocking.
Yesterday was a stunningly bad day for Norway, thoughts are with the country.
Not much else to say really.

Indeed very shocking and sad news, and all the more frightening really that it seems to be the work of one man working alone.

Thank you for your thoughts.
Turns out the one they have caught is a Right wing fundamentalist Norwegian (may he rot in hell). They suspect there may be another person involved.
The island shootings happened just a few miles from my house, and I had a 30 mile detour to get home from work yesterday. Lots of Police, ambulances, military and helicopters in the area.

Wish I could've been there to try to do something about it. My condolences to those affected.

Pretty sad copycat idiot killers who get so upset about how other people think and act that they feel the need to kill to make a political point.

I'm very happy to say that Norway will come through this stronger and more united, though. As most other Swedes I generally prefer making fun of Norwegians, but fact is they're smart and thorough as all hell, and will figure out how to make their society safer and more resilient while still safeguarding individual's rights to hunt, defend themselves and use chemicals in farming etc.

One minute silence in Norway from 1200 local time in remembrance of the victims of Fridays terrorist attacks.

I watched live and paid my respects.

I'm surprised they closed the court session.

Thank you DaddyHoggy.

Considering his stated intentions for using the courts to promote his cause, I'm not surprised. Also, I'm not sure this guy will survive long if they expose him to the public at this stage.

The BBC interviewed several prominent Norwegians (a Politics expert and a Media Expert) - both said, it should have been an idle threat, since the judge could/should have curtailed any soapboxing by simply stringently enforcing the normal judicial rules. As I know nothing about Norwegian Law I can only compare it to UK Law, where there's an initial "How do you plead?" where the accused listens to the charges read against him and then enters his plea. I'm guessing that under Norwegian law/process there would be a small opportunity for him to interject with his reasoning for such an atrocity.

Under Norwegian law he has a right to give a statement when he gives his plea, and as it turned out he actually started to read from his manifest as a part of his explanation to his plea before the judge stopped him. However the reason actually given by the police for requesting a closed court hearing was mainly twofold. For his protection and a need to keep him isolated and prevent any form of communication by him to the outside world while this is being investigated.
The general consensus and attitude here in Norway now is, do not give this man any exposure that may forward his cause, so the closed hearing was expected by most.

Very sensible. If you deny a fire oxygen, it goes out...

The professional investigations points to the conclusions, that this person worked alone.
But...
I must confess that I have serious doubts about that.
