Why does the key "found_system_seed" appear in some oolite-save files but not others?

A very interesting question.

I really mean it. I don't know even 1% of the keys.
And I always want to learn more.

There is a saying in Sweden - "You learn as long as you live"!
But I would like it to be - "You live as long as you learn".

Apparently none knows the answer to this question.
This makes the wizards and the masters and the experts strongly blush.

Well.. such things can happen in big systems. A key is forgotten.
And no one knows who put it there. Or what it is for.

hmm... I think it is time for a big, fat cigar.

found_system_seed is the key that holds the result of a search by typing and is used to set the target system correctly when a game is loaded. Take a savefile that does not contain it, load it, go to the Galactic Chart screen and start typing a name till it marks a planet as found. Then save and you will find the key in your newly saved game file.

Just tested it. Searched for a system in gal-chart (F6 - F6) and when I found it, then saved.
And, believe it or not, it was there: found_system_seed.

And when I loaded the save-file again, then the system was marked on the gal-chart.

Thanks for the excellent answer. :)
