You said they were persistent. Might I ask how persistent? Are they three-tries-and-then-give-up persistent, or chase-you-across-the-eight-charts persistent? I don't want to be the "holy" brothers' public enemy #1.
Let me put it this way: For the Black Monks it's either repayment or purgatory. And they make sure that there is no third option.

In other words: persistent until you're dead. You won't get rid of them ever.

I'm glad I died. Well, I wish I'd lived longer, but I'd rather not be hunted all over the Ooniverse.

Not to worry Ryan, you have been properly avenged. It went like this.

"Stormbringer here. You wouldn't know of a fellow named Ryan Hoots, would you?"

Monk: "Hoots..? Oh, yes! He defaulted, and we have been tracking him. Would you know where Commander Hoots is, by any chance?"

"Umm... Maybe. But to show there's no hard feelings for you boys shooting up his freighter, he asked me to deliver some dinner."

Monk: "That's nice of him! And I am feeling a little peaked. Pray tell, what's in the doggie bag?"

"A plutonium sandwich with malice on the side. Fox four!"

Monk: "...You asshole."

 Very funny! Those monks. If I get a chance to, I'll see what happens when a Q-Bomb goes off near their monastery...

That may depend on which saved game you went back to. If it's more recent than the loan, then you still owe the money, and they're still coming after it.

It was before they came after me, but after the loan.

I've been watching Black Adder again lately (I hadn't seen it since long before I ever found Oolite) and I noticed the episode 'Money' had some banking black monks. I'm guessing that was the inspiration for our fiat friends, the Black Monks.

(Always thought it was fun to mess with them - and will always splash one of their gunships if I see it spanking a poor trader)

What I always thought was interesting about the Black Monks was the fact that they advertise debt as being holy... but then try to kill you for being in it....

So I had just jumped into a system, when I found a hapless Gecko set upon by one of the gunships. The poor pilot was snobbing for mercy, but none was being given. So I decided to lend a helping hand, and sprayed a few shots at the gunship. Pretty soon I also found that other passer-bys were helping blast away the gunship, and even a viper or two took the time to take potshots at the debt collector. However, later on, many systems later, I got fired upon by GalCop for assisting another pilot in defense of the gunship. Seems a little interesting. Are gunships considered criminals or good people by GalCop, and does that happen to reflect the legal status of the target of the gunship? (AKA, attacking a fugitive makes the gunship a bounty hunter, but attacking a cleanie makes the gunship a pirate?)
I'm Ravished by the Sheer Implausibility of that Last Statement

It should be a crime for Anacondas to fly without escort. That much temptation is just too much to resist.

Pretty much, yes..

(nice to see yet another Culture fan, btw!)
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied
