Griff Textures

First of all, I would like to say that I LOVE Griff's oxps. This is NOT a bitching session against them. What it is constitutes problems concerning the Textures within the oxps that I can't seem to get ironed out. I decided to use the griff_shipset_all_in_1.oxp. I tried following the ReadMe files so I wouldn't get things confused, but I fear I have erred, and I don't know how. You may all groan at this point, or earlier if you choose. At first it said I was missing certain texture pngs concerning the Krait, so I hunted them down within the single ship oxps, and transferred them to the Texture file of the above mentioned oxp. Then I started getting error warnings about other ship's missing certain texture files, so I did the same with them. Ummm, I think I'm really screwed up now, because instead of helping the situation, I'm getting a plethora of texture errors. Here is my Last Log to date:

As you can see, it's a mess. Should I remove all the texture files I used to try fixing the original errors? If so, how do I solve the texture errors that occurred originally? I'm sorry for my density. I truly am trying to learn this stuff. Honest.

When did you download the Griff oxps? If you look over in the main Griff thread you'll see that there's been some recent uploads and changes, some involving the wreckage and sparks... If you've added these recently, maybe you got some of the versions which had some changes and some which didn't?

My suggestion would probably be to clean out your oxp folder of Griff's oxps, re-download them, and see if some of the errors fix themselves. Once you've done that, we might be able to tell if something's got left out of one of the uploads.

Incidentally, you appear to have the rock hermit in both halfsize and fullsize textures, which seems rather redundant and pointless.

Yes Mauiby de Fug's quite correct, earlier this week i tried to take the extra explosion debris stuff out of the all-in-1 bundle and put it into its own oxp but due to some epic bungling on my part it's taken me a few goes to get it right (Texture files missing, AI's & scripts in the wrong folders etc), so if you've got the time & bandwidth i'd also suggest clearing out your currently installed version of "griff_shipset_all_in_1.oxp" and re-download it from Cmdr Cheyd's deephorizons link ( http://deephorizonindustries.com/griffi ... v1.2.1.zip ). I'd also re-download the Griff_alloys_and_wreckage.oxp from my box.net site http://www.box.net/shared/rpkms25cc9 if you want the explosion stuff back in.

With the all-in-1 you don't need to have these OXPs installed as they're now included in the bundle:
griff_coriolis_normalmapped.oxp
griff_barrel_alt_normalmapped.oxp
griff_normalmapped_ship_decals.oxp
griff_asteroids_normalmapped_test.oxp

and you only need to have one of either of these 2 installed:
griff_rock_hermit_halfsize_textures.oxp
griff_rock_hermit_fullsize_textures.oxp

I download, and installed the griff_shipset_all_in_1.oxp, and also the alloys_and_wreckage.oxp, and briefly booted Oolite. After closing it, I checked the Last Log and didn't see any conflicts. I'll have to report on how it goes during actual play later, as I have to go somewhere right now, but I'll let you know. Thanks for all the advice. :)

I'm not sure what happened from what I see on this Last Log. My system froze up just as I was jumping into Witchspace, and I did notice that coming into THAT system, the action was kind of jerky some of the time, but I don't see a cause. Here's the Last Log. Maybe you can see what I couldn't.

Oh, and let me add that all of the oxps seen in this log were entered one at a time, playing several games for each one. I eliminated several with that recommended system. Also note that the railgun.oxp is causing some trouble, as the projectiles sometimes hit my own ship, but I'm keeping it because it does great when my ship is at a dead stop, and I'm firing at a Thargoid Carrier.

You should upgrade escort contracts - it is at version 1.1 now.

I get stuttering in some systems too along with occasional freezes. It was at it's worst in systems were Galactic Navy had spawned one of it's fleets across the space lane, so I have lost that OXP. Still investigating....

i'll check that out. Now that you said it, I do believe a good size Galactic Fleet was in the system in which I got the jitters. I wonder why that should cause a problem? I think I'll live with it, though, as it is cool to jump into a system and see those battle cruisers, and carriers. Thanks for the escort contracts tip.

The stuttering you describe is probably linked to a couple of things. I have had this myself in the past and it can make the game un-playable. Ultimately it is caused by the frame-rate dropping and this can be caused by a large number of entities and large textures.
This might be why you notice it when Gal Navy spawns a battle fleet, which can add a large number of new ships to a system. Something like an asteroid field can add 20-30 entities as well. Remember when you enter a system, all the entities in it are spawned, everywhere. They're not just added where you are. So it's not uncommon to have hundreds of entities in any given system, and the more OXPs you've got adding entities the worse this gets. The more entities, the more work the computer has to do.
To make matters worse, big, fancy and complex textures also put a strain on the computer, particularly the graphics handling. So with a range of OXPs such as yours the graphics is going to struggle on all but the very best computers.
For instance I see you have over 20 individual OXP ships/stations installed all of which will be adding entities often with 'demanding' textures, and that's not counting the entities added by OXPs like Commies, Thargon Threat or Behemoth Spacewar just to give a few examples. If you remember how big Famous Planets was when you downloaded it you'll start to understand 'big' textures. And Griff's explosion debris has been so troublesome to some users he's now separated it from the main OXP to make it optional.
So put simply, you've over-loaded your game to the point where the computer can't cope, and this will continue to get worse if you add even more OXPs. It might be worth trying disabling shaders on the computer, but if that doesn't work, you will need to consider purging some OXPs if you want the game to be playable.

Dang!! I was afraid someone was going to say something like that. All those ships are really cool to have around, but I see what you mean. Guess I'm going to have to sacrifice some of it. One of these days I'm going to get a system with 8gbs RAM, and a 3.5 to 4ghz processor, with a video card fast enough to power a dragster......or something. Thanks Smivs. I like all your ships to. I can think of a couple I could do without, but very grudgingly. :(

BGS-M has some quite processor intensive scripting. On Svengali's advice I downgraded to the C + I packs. You lose a few sounds but play is definitely smoother. The problem with Galactic Navy was also some intensive ship script access from it's Mine Sweepers rather than graphics as such.

What's your computer stats? I've on a 6-7 year old XP laptop, 1.73 Ghz Pentium chip, 1 Gb Ram, ATI Mobility x700 GPU with OpenGL version 2.1.7169.

edit - sorry silly question - they are in your log.

Just for clarity: the number of OXPs as such has no impact on frame rate.

The point which is much more important is: is there one OXP among them which adds a lot of additional ships to your current system? This is where the impact lies. Another important point is: is there one OXP among them which adds a ship (or more than one) which makes a heavy use of shaders? This will also make an impact (more visibly on old computers than on a new one).

So, it's not about number of OXPs, but about what each of them does. You can add hundreds or thousands of ship OXPs or ship sets without getting any stutter, as long as those OXPs just bring variety and don't add more ships per system than you would have in Oolite without OXPs. On the other hand, one single OXP which for some reason tries to add thousands of simple asteroids to your current system could bring your computer to a screeching halt, even if you don't have any other OXP installed.

Not a silly question. Heck, I ask enough questions that sound much worse than that. Yeah, this laptop should be able to handle quite a bit, it's just that I wanted it all, and that is not possible outside a gamer's machine, and I should have realized that. After all, Oolite is a gamer's game to a great extent. I'm having more fun with it than I have with most other space battle games I've played. I think I solved my problems. I removed all mission oxps, Griffs_all_in_1.oxp, famous planets, Diso, etc., along with thargoidthreat.oxp, and am now in the process of adding Griff's ships back in, one at a time. I don't seem to be having any more problems. I guess I'll find out as I go. I hate to lose the Behemoths, and Thargoid Carriers. They just add too much fun, as do all the variety of ships. I'm about willing to give up all but the ship oxps. :)

I got rid of any asteroid oxps too. I think you hit it on the head. I had too many shade intensive oxps. It really does run better now.....at least so far. :)

One of these days I'm going to get a system with 8gbs RAM, and a 3.5 to 4ghz processor, with a video card fast enough to power a dragster......or something. Thanks Smivs. I like all your ships to. I can think of a couple I could do without, but very grudgingly. :(
Just for clarity: the number of OXPs as such has no impact on frame rate.

I got rid of any asteroid oxps too. I think you hit it on the head. I had too many shade intensive oxps. It really does run better now.....at least so far. :)
Commander McLane, is your head starting to hurt? I know mine is. :P
