Griff's version of the Thargoid warship. Before anything else, I have to say that Griff surpassed himself this time. This ship is just too good for screenshots. You need to see this in motion to appreciate the effects that this thing posesses. Truly alien.
So can somebody make a hi-def video of this and upload it to YouTube please? pretty please with sugar on top?

With a few exceptions (such as the Thargoid Warship on the previous page), most of Griff's ships look superb even without shaders and on low-spec systems (such as mine).

My only concern would be file-size, as we know once fancy texturing and such comes into play, very quickly the file size of the OXP (or trunk in this case) hits the roof. And for me that in itself may well discourage some people.

I would certainly agree that the bare-basic graphics need something doing to them (the flat colour blocky ones), but even there something like Sung's textures or System Redux more than fits the bill to bring things up to at least this decade.

I have thought and written about this before, and I now think there should be some mechanism of replacing the basic ships with an arbitrary set.

And then somehow, all of the OXPs that create named variants (not customised textures, those have to be model specific) have to be able to deal with it as if it is just one basic set.

I hope that the Admiralty staff can come up with a mechanism for this.

Best wishes,
Oscar

I'm not away... ...only busy with RL, but this will change the next weeks. And then I'm back to finish it :-)

Whatever it is - this gets better and better. And already inflationary the amount of times the adjective "awesome" comes to my mind these days in this thread :D

Yeah, and I wish those thargoids would already be available for game play, instead of being something to watch ;)

However, the "thing" surely must be a station. The solar panels already indicate it, however, there's clearly a docking bay visible! The two triangles point towards the entry. It's just the immense scale of that station which prevents a pilot from noticing the dock during a first view ;)

Well, you are building from trunk, right? Just remove the line
ai_type = "dumbAI.plist";
from the griff_normalmapped_thargoid_test ship in shipdata.plist and they become perfectly combat-capable. The above line is specifically put there to make them a tourist attraction.

Oh, I know it is a station. I just developed a blind spot for things that will kill poor old FX5200 in my iMac. ;)

Hehe, this 'thing' won't kill your machine, I think. It is not so ressource hungry as you might think. The mission handling (and related ships) takes a bit more :-) But we'll see... Just out of interest. Can your machine run buoyRepair?

Didn't try it. With shaders off, 60 objects, i'm getting around 40FPS. When in action (Navy mission, 120+ ships) fps drops to 12-15.

System redux actually helps FPS. When I have it installed, 57-60 fps instead of 35-40.

Latest trunk version.

I'm for replacing the basic shipset of Oolite core with Griff's designs.

I guess I'm not the only one by far.

Simply awesome.
whats the use? You need 1.73 to run it with those graphics.

Huh? If you're referring to Neolite, I'm using 1.72.2 and they're running just fine.

Uhhh... Lestradae said "Griff's designs"... Neolite ships are designed by Simon B, not Griff. And (for now) you need to build from trunk if you want to see Griff's ships as they are intended to be viewed. (trust me, it's worth it!)

Worth up-dating to 1.73 - Griff's stuff is awesome!
