My out-of-ooniverse explanation for this is:
  • Oolite (without OXPs – Core Oolite, if you will) is a recreation of classic Elite, in particular BBC Elite.
  • Classic Elite does not make sense.
  •  For space games that are not recreations of classic Elite, see games that are not Oolite.
Changing the hyperspace rules would be a significant change to the game, to the extent that having the same galaxy layouts would make limited sense. It’s not going to happen by my hand.

Nope, still not convinced, and it worked very well with Elite-A. Also, that's not even a re-make, since it's using mostly the same code as BBC Elite! However, you're the one writing this thing, not me, which gives you rather a bigger say in the matter!

Out of interest, what were the BBC version galactic entry points?

The only one I can remember is that galaxy 2 was Ororra, but I never did get round to doing a complete loop through the galaxies.

Beeb galaxy entry points:

Galaxy 1: Usle (Mainly Industrial, Confederacy, Tech Level 9)
Galaxy 2: Ororra (Poor Agricultural, Confedaracy, Tech Level 4)
Galaxy 3: Xeines (Poor Agricultural, Anarchy, Tech Level 3)
Galaxy 4: Soenisti (Poor Agricultural, Anarchy, Tech Level 4)
Galaxy 5: Ceinan (Rich Agricultural, Confederacy, Tech Level 7)
Galaxy 6: Intisoar (Average Agricultural, Confederacy, Tech Level 7)
Galaxy 7: Beritere (Poor Agricultural, Anarchy, Tech Level 3)
Galaxy 8: Cecees (Poor Industrial, Anarchy, Tech Level 8 )

Although these are indeed the nearest systems to the same point (I think), there appears to be a definite bias towards the type of system. Half of them being anarchies and the other half being confederacies is pushing things a bit! Whether it's coincidence or a not very random random number generator I don't know.

constrictor mission

hi there, does anyone know how to trigger the constrictor mission on elite for the amiga 500? ive heard different things..is it after x amount of jumps in galaxy 2, kills, points, triggered at a certain planet??

I have a dangerous rating and 200000 points and have flown to all the corners of galaxy one and two...

anyone help??

Hi captaincol. If it's anything like the other versions, you need to have (I think) over 256 kills, to be in Galaxy 1 or 2, and have a Clean legal rating. It does exist in the game – check out the screenshots here:

Even with Italian there could be a problem, since "posteriore di piombo" (lead posterior) sounds like the polite version of a phrase meaning "annoyingly lazy"... :)

IMHO it makes little sense in English. I am pretty sure "Iron Ass" is not well understood to english speakers, and "lead posterior" unless used in a clear context has little to no chance of being understood.

So I wouldnt worry too much about translations failing to be clear ;)

I think this may be the kind of translation that doesn't work literally... probably better to think of totally different phrases that also could be slang for "nearly invincible" but that work in their native language.

Maybe "oberschlange?" (Because the oldest and best ships are all snakes...)

Unless schlange already has a second meaning in German... and I can guess what that would be ! :-)

Right, word for word translation makes no sense, but my point way that even the original is pretty meaningless. We know what it means, but I wouldnt regard it as standard english, even as slang.

I am not a native English speaker but, after accepting that an "iron ass" was a beefed up ship and part of Oolite jargon - that is common speak in Oolite universe - "lead posterior" is really really nice, sounds to me as an ancient lady that tries to use a term she once heard...

To translate in other language it could be nice to know what was originally an "iron ass" and why. There's an USAF general that had that nickname, and I found it referred to american custom bike, but have no clear idea except "Oolite jargon".
