Heh - I know the author, but can't recall the book nor the character. He's a countryman of mine too, so I should be ashamed!

I only know it because it was the tag that my mate used to introduce me to the author's work. "One of the only grown up books I've ever read with a talking ant in it."

Hmmm, don't recall the exact name, but he evolves into a superior race, esp. intellectually, the same race that built the ringworld. Also physically much stronger than normal humans.
