The earlier clue gives 'the Kingdom of the Raven', which leads, via google, to Shaturanga: The Story of Onus, by Brian Snelson.

And we have a winner. Your turn, sir.

For the record, for those of you who were intrigued by the whole thing:
I read the book about half a decade ago after the author placed a copy in my hand. Since I know the guy, I'm probably not the best person to offer an unbiased opinion on the work. However, if you are still curious, send me a PM.

The title surprised me… it’s a form of Chaturanga, an ancient Indian board game, thought to be the forerunner of chess.

Back with a question later…

A quick and easy musical question: name me the rock album whose title is the name of a fictional starship?

"Firefly", by Uriah Heep?

Sorry... I should've said it's from a sci-fi novel. Good try, though.

Actually, it's just occurred to me that the name of that spaceship is actually "Serenity" ... I take it it's not the album of that name by Culture Beat then?

Oooh, I like this.
From Dickens to Whedon. Quite the transition.

Wild stab in the dark: Isn't someone here on the board flitting around in a C3 called "Rolling Thunder"? And isn't that and album as well? By... Jefferson Starship??

Just seen your edit CR... Rolling Thunder is a fine ship, and a great album by Mickey Hart... not the answer, though.

@ Disembodied: nope... same year as the Uriah Heep album, though.

Hmm ... was the ship named after the album, or the album named after the ship? Or is this just coincidence?

The album is earlier than the novel that the ship appears in… I suspect that the author may have liked this band.

There's "Heart of Gold" (Neil Young/Douglas Adams).
Not that Neil Young qualifies as a band...

Nor does Heart of Gold qualify as an album... good song, though.

The album cover features a spaceship, and the novel (in which the starship is one of the main settings) is high class space opera.

I cracked, and resorted to Wikipedia ... it's Clear Air Turbulence by the Ian Gillan Band. The CAT is of course a ship from Consider Phlebas by Iain Banks, who is known for playing games in his books with music trivia ...
