He has been about on SSC recently. Agree with Diz - he'd like to see the OXP expanded, I reckon.

Having Thargoid's [wiki]RealisticDamage OXP[/wiki], Dexter was indeed injured beyond repair. I have extensively modified superbatprime's OXP for my own use and renamed it, Galley Mates. It's a nasty habit I have, mucking about into scripts and plists.

Yep.. I have about half a dozen that, every time an update is released, I have to go in and re-add my "tweaks"..

After learning the hard way, I now keep a folder with all my snippets of code neatly filed away for easy re-use.

Ha, that's not a nasty habit, it's a Way of Life! :D

And dammit, sometimes Oolite crashes at just the wrong moment.

Completing another cargo run in Chart 5, down in the south west corner, jumped into a system called Aquti. Nothing interesting to report in system on arrival. As per my usual procedure, I dialled up the nearest rock hermit and locked my torus drive on the destination.

I arrived at the rock hermit that was in the glare of the sun and proceeded to load up on the minerals they had on offer.

Then I noticed the name of the rock hermit (and this is where I wish I had a screenshot as evidence): Drew's Sweat Market

@Drew, is there something you're not telling us?
I have some history with rock hermits, but we try not to talk about <whispers> her </whispers>.

Cheers,

Drew.

GalCop treachery strikes again.

Filled with a fresh sense of self righteousness after my mercy mission delivering essential medical supplies (read: narcotics) across the galaxy, and also doing my bit to help out political prisoners in a tight spot (i.e. disguised as slaves), I have found that GalCop have these 'illegal' markets well and truly sewn up.**

I was thinking, how can I get around the docking fines that I sometimes incur when sneaking into the main station? My bright idea was to exit the cash economy as much as possible, and store my wealth as Platinum, Gold and Gems. Hey, I could make myself into a self contained space faring commodities market.

But no!!!! Those GalCop bastards make sure they get you coming and going. It turns out I can only hold half a tonne of Platinum. At best that means I can hide 40,000Cr frm GalCop's grubby hands.

Assuming they've screwed with the Gems and Gold markets as well, the most I can keep out of cold, hard credits (HAH!!) is:

Platinum - 40,000Cr (@ 80Cr per kg)
Gold - 20,000Cr (@ 40Cr per kg)
Gems - 12,000Cr (@ 24Cr per g)

Nevertheless, where there's a will, there's a dead relative...

(** Funnily enough, I've yet to find a way to justify hauling firearms, even though my ship is iron-assed and well armed in its own right. It's a funny old galaxy)

Not true. You can hold as much Platinum as you like. But everything over 500kg is stored in a cargo containers. Thus you'll slowly fill up your hold. So, in a Cobby you can theoretically ship 35.5 tuns of Platinum (35 containers of 1000kg each, and the content of your safe), corresponding to 2.84 million credits at the max price. With a bigger cargo hold, you can of course hold more.

By the same calculation, and filling a Cobra's hold completely with Gems, you could hide a staggering 852,000,000 cr from GalCop. That should suffice even for the richest of players. (You'll have a hard time purchasing the required 35,500,000 grams of Gems, though.)

The catch, of course, is that once you start storing Platinum in cargo canisters, those canisters might be destroyed if you get hit. At a potential loss of over 80,000 credits per canister, it's probably not worth the risk.

and not forgetting that you can only sell a relatively tiny amount at any one time

Is the value of your cargo is included in the trade-in value of your ship? If so you might be able to "sell" a whole cargo-load at once by buying a new ship.

I didn't think it was. I always sell my cargo and unload any missiles before buying a new ship.

Very true, but I consider that to be the balance against losing 5000cr every time I dock as a fugitive (assuming all my wealth is stored in credits).

(I could of course remove the Docking Protocols OXP**, but where would the fun be in that?)

** Don't quote me on the name; I know it's called something like that...

That would only be a problem when I need to trade up to a new ship. The only other really big ticket item is the Naval Shields at around 50,000Cr...oh and repairing a Naval Energy Unit - repairing that piece of kit stings.

At most markets, there's usually capacity to unload quite a few thousand credits worth of cargo.

I take your point though. Sometime in the distant future I want to upgrade to a Caddy. Always wanted to fly an uber-ship, even if only to see what it's like. At 1.2 million a pop (and that's for the base, bog standard model), it would take quite a few jumps to convert my gems and precious metals into credits. Again, it's all part of the fun!!!! :-)
