Well, it couldn't possibly be Millennium Falcon and Han Solo. They just flew around doing heroic hero stuff. We never once saw them hauling any cargo in those three movies.

It's a freighter and they started out in the (mostly illegal) cargo business. Solo's past career in this business is responsible for big chunks of the plot of the second and third films. It's good enough for me.

It was plainly just a narrative device to get the characters into the otherworldly setting instantaneously, much like the TARDIS or the "transporter" in Star Trek. Do we even know what sort of trade the Nostromo was supposedly engaged in?
