OK, I've uploaded some trial images to the wiki now so we can try this out. As an example I have added one to the bottom of the wiki page for my Aliens OXZ so you can all see what it is all about.

If anybody else wants to try this out, the images are

Code: Select all

tag-colour-red.png
tag-colour-orange.png
tag-colour-green.png
tag-colour-blue.png
tag-colour-violet.png
The images can obviously be changed as needed. For instance it might look better as a box, or maybe without the horizontal dividers.

Edited to add:- Ive just changed the Aliens indicator from green to orange, on the basis that one of the aliens is a bit nasty and puts up a fair fight. This is the kind of value judgement that will be need, I think.

Sorry about being negative here, but I'm having great difficulty trying to get my head around this. How complex does this system really need to be? What is it's purpose? If it's meant to give newbies some clue about the oxps, then we really need just one tag: "safe". After the player has played the game and is familiar with it, I think wiki will serve him/her better.

What Smivs some time ago tried to build, a list of newbie friendly oxps is in my opinion still a very good idea. Now it's possible to have it elegantly in-game. The difference from the earlier debate is that now the author of the oxp decides whether his/hers oxp is suitable for a newbie or not. No need for forum consensus.

If an oxp is not tagged to be "safe", then the player is encouraged to read about it from the wiki or forum before installing.

Slightly larger would be nice.. I had to put my other pair of glasses on to read that..
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

@ spara. I do take your point, but i think we have an oportunity here to give a lot of useful guidance in a simple graphic format. Remember nothing is set in stone - this is just an idea that I think is worth trialling.

@Dizzie. Yes, everything is open to change based on what people think of it and want. The whole idea could still end up in the trashcan.

I have started updating all my wiki pages - The Contractor page is worth a look to give an example of how flexible this system could be.

That's good. I like the fact you tell the reason for classification on the side. Is there some way of combining those into one?

I don't know :) but I did wonder that myself. I suppose we could have more images for all the various permutations, but to me that sounds like over-complication.

I have now added the Balance Indicator to all my OXP and OXZ wiki pages (these are listed on my User wiki page - link in my sig) to trial this system and see what if any feedback we get. Is anybody else considering trying these out? No compulsion of course, but more pages with these will give greater exposure and hopefully more feedback.
I have also today uploaded 'final' versions of the images to the wiki. These are just a bit more polished and I think look rather good, if I say so myself. The image names are a few posts up if you are wanting to try this system out. Just add this to your wiki page

Code: Select all

==Gameplay and Balance indicator==

for green (neutral), or specify the correct colour for your OXP/OXZ.

I've added one to the [EliteWiki] Q-Bomb Detector.. decided to go with blue, though the difference it makes is so small I'm tossing up whether to class it as green.. opinions?

Thanks Dizzie. Blue sounds right as it must give the player a slight advantage.

So the [EliteWiki] Green Gecko would be green... yes? <sniggers>
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

On the bright side, at least it shatters their eardrums first!
