Yay!

This reminds me of a short story I just read...

Yeah - name the story and author.
Clue:
The main protagonist shows how to create a new universe from a single photon.
...and keep it under lightspeed!

no idea. but curious how (s)he did it.

In the Lem story, Ion Tichy shoots a Photon (or electron, no more remember) back through time, right to the moment of the universe beginnning, so there would be a reason for the nothingness to loose its equilibrium.

I reckon we need another clue, Zieman.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Ok, here goes:

In this story the hero's people have developed a sort of extreme schizophrenia to cope in a harsh and ever-changing environment.

Sorry all, I've had too busy week at work.

I don't give up yet :)

Here are more clues:

The author is British.

In the storyline, Milky Way has been colonized by humanity, using seed ships, which has resulted in vast variety of cultures in radically different stages of development.

The story was published in 2008.

I have no idea what story might be meant, but it sure sounds like a good read.

I hoping to eventually be able to get one of these right - because today at my daughter's school fete I bought a stack of Sci-Fi books all published in the 60s and 70s - so I'm looking forward to having my obscure Sci-Fi book revenge!

Never believed nobody would quess this, TBH I was pretty sure that this would be one of the quickies.

Oh all right, here's the answer:

The Tear by Ian McDonald

The Tear appears at least in 'The mammoth book of best new SF 22'

Oh well, gotta come up with another one...

Here, name book and author (again, how boring :P):

Glaciers play a central part in the story, during which's course the probable origins of the Atlantis myth are also discovered.
...and keep it under lightspeed!

Sounds vaguely like the "Opening of the World" trilogy by Harry Turtledove. So I'm going to take a triple-blast at this:

"Beyond the Gap"
"Breath of God"
"The Golden Shrine"

making up the trilogy (not sure if I'm allowed multiple guesses when the answer may span more than one book). I haven't read them, but I know the premise is iron-age humans realising that fresh territory is being uncovered by a receding glacier... or sumthin' like that :)
