It's not in space (or even spaaaaace!), and I doubt if it would make you laugh, but there's the superintelligent dog Sirius from Olaf Stapledon's novel of the same name.
I've read Sirius more than once, but I'm afraid I really did mean IN SPACE - sorry if it wasn't clear. So I'm going to have to say no, but have a meaningless bonus point for pointing out that loophole!

Once again plucking the low hanging fruit.

Rocket Racoon from the Guardians of the Galaxy films and prior to that his appearances in Marvel Comics.

Once owned Hulk #271 (first appearance of Rocket Racoon) but it got sold along with the rest of my Comic Collection whence moving day came about a few years back.

OK, that's a definite yes, and one of the characters I was thinking of when I set the question. Have a point for a good answer, and an MBP for getting the ball rolling. Of course this means no more Marvel examples.

How about "Haredevil Hare", starring Bugs Bunny and Marvin the Martian?

That's also a definite yes, and one I never thought of, which is very odd. Have a point, an MBP for making me laugh, and an earth-shattering kaboom!

Three to go! And no more Bugs Bunny or others of the Loony Tunes family.

A Kzin character, Speaker-to-Animals (later known as Chmeee), subsequently played a significant role in Niven's Hugo and Nebula award-winning Ringworld
If big sentient warlike cats qualify.
Arthur: OK. Leave this to me. I'm British. I know how to queue.
OR i could go with
Arthur Dent: I always said there was something fundamentally wrong with the universe.
or simply

I'm a bit iffy as to whether Kzinti are cats or aliens that just happen to be vaguely catlike, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. No MBP though since it's a bit borderline.

Two to go! And no more from the Known Space universe or by Niven.

Well, he's a cat and it's a story, even if it probably isn't known much outside this community, so I'm accepting it.

One to go, but no more Elite / Oolite universe, and I think no more cats...

OK... let's drop a few unsubtle hints...

Dolphins... in... SPAAAAAAAAACE! in a novel of interstellar war.

Arthropods... in... SPAAAAAAAAACE! in a story of human and AI transcendence.

Bears... in... SPAAAAAAAAACE! in several books and stories by a duo of writers.

Dogs... in... SPAAAAAAAAACE! in an Oscar-nominated cinematographic entertainment.

Need I go on?

OK, if there's no other reply in the next 24 hours I think that the winner has to be the last response, from Cholmondely. Watch this space....

O dearie me, no! You don't remember the ghastly mess which ensued the last time I won the poisoned chalice...

Why can't we award it to Captain Hesperus?
