As an anagram, Evil Joe will do nicely, thank you.
Next question:
A Terran anthropologist, studying a declining Mars, becomes ‘involved’ with a young alien woman and ends up in chains in an ancient alien city. There are barbarians at the gate, the city is dying and the residents are resigned to their fate. In the end, he is released by the young woman.
A novelette from the nineteen fifties… author and title, please.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

A clue:
The author co-wrote several screenplays for big hollywood movies, from the forties to the seventies.
One was for a well known sci-fi film, but was probably not used… although the author did receive a screenplay credit.

Another clue:
The BBC dramatised the story for radio (brilliantly) within the last five years.

An anagram then...
... re-arranged, this is the author's name:
The Black Tiger
and the original cover art (with title and author blanked):

Correct, goran scores again… and the sci-fi film that
she wrote a screenplay for is ‘The Empire Strikes Back’.

I managed to miss Your reply.
Novel from last century: an expedition to the outer planets of our solar system discovers a new satellite...
This book is the first (and the best) part of the trilogy.

Many creatures and/or names are based on Greek and Roman mythology, including the big alien boss.
