Dan Simmons, Hyperion.

I had a nice clue lined up: “A group of pilgrims while away the time by telling each other stories.” Unfortunately, the answer was Hyperion

Yeah, very good... but which timeline(s) did they while away?

I saw an omnibus edition in the library of all four novels... probably the largest paperback I've ever seen.

Your turn, sir.

The only non-little-gray-men I know about are the Grey Men from the Wheel of time books, and the ones that were cut from the original The Time Machine by HG Wells, but it didn't fit the other clues.

So whats the next challenge? :P

Ha! A red herring ... I should have expected that from you

EDIT: Probably not it as also obvious, but it might fit ... Matrix, the Wachowski brothers?
